The Magi D'Invocati

ArtTome

Overview

A massive tome cobbled together from a variety of sources, each in a variety of languages, scripts, or pictographs - some of the pages possess an unsavory quality to them that you cannot quite shake. The binding of the book, unlike the interior, is of high quaity and has withstood the ages, marked with a combination of symbols, mimicking the Sigil of Mane, the swirl you saw in the bastion, and another yet unknown. The cover states it is 'The Magi D'invocati', the inset directly inside shows the symbol that Vennimen made on one page, and on the other page a drawing of twinned flames, twins except for their flames reversed.

Quick Analysis

It quickly becomes obvious that even if you knew the many languages found within any progress with this tome would be laborious, the mad hand that assembled and maintained these pages did so with an alien logic.

Detailed Reading

Egun

Precious few pages of this tome are written in your native tongue and they are, if anything, more haphazardly organized than the more foreign languages. They appear to be less involved with mysticism than you would expect and much drier in tone, reading like recipes or storeroom ledgers, though many of the words and terms are meaningless to you.   The ledgers are a chaotic mess, the creature that arranged this time seems to have sought out some order in this chaos judging by the sudden rips and tears before combining the information. Numerous markers for esperite marking the sources with recurring yields, the destinations marked for a 'Wind Channel' to the Capital. In the margins beneath and above, partially torn, the ledgers tell a more desperate tale, of food and water sources moving ever eastward, in decreasing number.   Several messages speak of a preparation for, and the aftermath of, a battle at 'Sessymyr'. The presence of a new form of guardian delivered from 'The Capital' that made it through before 'The Tunnels' collapsed inspires hope in some, but the commanders, signed as the 'Hidden Eye' seem to have a concern about some new weapon developed by 'Janus the Magi'.   Quintus Bartholomew Marion KNOWLEDGE - An allusion to a 'storage shutter' is circled in bright dripping crimson, its description of a sheer unworked surface inset into stone triggers your memory. The writing is a reminder to those who flee 'The Corrupted' that supplies have been secured inside these shutters protected by a 'Janus-Veri Loop' and can be unsealed through the typical Rite of Passage either by a Magi or, failing that, one who sanctifies in the Ritual of the Twin Flame (any amount will do)'   Quintus Bartholomew Marion SURVIVAL - You peace together frantic communiques between various individuals, discussing the disaster at Sessymr - it appears they are trying to gather up 'Esperite Conduits' from any possible storehouses before the 'Corrupted' advance. They mention a lighthouse along the Penitent Bay, a lost shipment along the coast north to the Wielas Lyceum, and a lost supply train inside Sessymyr.

Basari

The words in Basari are older than the words in Egun, but still much younger than the stranger writings. These are esoteric, spiritual, and occasionally apocalyptic in tone. Weaved in between these rambling portents are ritual notes that remind you of the sorcery practiced in your homeland, many of them minor magics but some of them describing feats unlike anything you have heard of.   Quintus Bartholomew Marion noticed that the spells and rituals make recurring reference to Dragons and the gifts thereof, often only implicitly in their phrasing and tone as if the reader should note the connection instinctively.   Quintus Bartholomew Marion believes that some magical value may be extrapolated from these notes, but it would require an actual student of the arcane.   Quintus Bartholomew Marion determined from the terrible map adjacent to one passage that it marks The Bastion as the 'Fall of Varakliminx's Shadow' and in Lower Plains Common says 'the bones bring it clarity, however brief - a source from before the Ken'   Joey the Sorcadin studies these tracts with Omen Felle and Andacia Reveille who both come to the conclusion that at least one of these passages describes a device depicted in the frantic notes of a runic page, an assemblage of metals and mirrored surfaces referred to roughly as 'when spirits wane thy frothed eye' "Could be we could make something like this... we got those fancy tools" - Omen Felle   Joey the Sorcadin studies the tome with Andacia Reveille who puzzles out a few ways to enhance her sorcerous powers, but she says a real Basari sorcerer may have more to say about these passages

Volkat

Three pages written on shark hides mark a rambling prayer to an underwater god, marking a covenant that the 'Great Wandering One' will always respond to the summons properly made.   Joey the Sorcadin searches for references to rites and rituals and finds recurring mention of the 'Rite of Birth' in which the 'Blood of Volkat' is taken to his brother, the Godling Erras, to nourish him as he was once nourished by the sea.   Joey the Sorcadin searches for references to rites and rituals and finds that the 'Great Wandering One' will always heed a summon

Lower Plains Common

Most of the notes in this book are written in a trembling hand in Lower Plains Common but very few of the original pages - with the notable exception of a short story written by a creature named 'Worgor the Prescient' detailing his(hers?) journey into the Land of Mists. Along his Journey this creature encountered many wondrous creatures, had several strange adventures, and eventually found a great ruin set before a pass between two slim cliffs, beneath it found a great spirit that spoke in an ancient tongue and answered questions you would ask of it.   Joey the Sorcadin looks for rituals and rites in the book and with the help of some native speakers draws out a somewhat tangled tale of a man seeking the aid of the gods to gain him vengeance. Most of the story is lost, but in what appears to be the final chapter of the tale the hero finds himself in the land of the dead, where he meets the Lord of Death who cannot harm him as he carries with him a single Rose in bloom from the surface world.

High Plains Common

With the help of Venimen you are able to identify that one of the mysterious languages is something called "High Plains Common," the language of the Drakari and the other creatures north of the Rim Mountains. His knowledge of the language is spotty, but an expert in the language may be able to make sense of these notes.

Runic

Amongst the runes you see various inscriptions mirroring the flaming tree, as well as the Sigil of Mane and certain other bizarre symbols you have seen. The runic language is by far the largest contributor to the book.   Quintus Bartholomew Marion is sure that ancient rituals are locked behind this strange language, but he fails to infer any greater knowledge.   Quintus Bartholomew Marion notes the usage of the Sigil of Mane before twinned flames, a rippling doorway drawn between them   Quintus Bartholomew Marion notes the comments in Lower Plains Common alongside the longest consistent section 'Montsavari, capital, secret of mane'   You have identified :   A 'Aspect of the Ward' somehow linked to a term used in reference to The Lord of the Woods   A 'Nightjaunt' somehow linked to a term used in reference to The Lord of the Woods   Joey the Sorcadin attempts to decipher the runes with a group of natives and other esoteric scholars but finds himself stymied by the complete absence of any kind of translation device. Venimen mentions to him that 'The Ark of Krayte' speaks in the old tongue to the Weavers, though they are loathe to address it without great need.

Notable Quotes

"I felt the fog and it no longer burned. This plague that had driven my ancestors far from their lands was little more than an illusory peril now. I stepped back into our past, not knowing what I might find. It was to be the last time I would see my home, and the first in what would be the adventure of a lifetime."   "Sullen great terror, white beneath the waves, devourer of flesh and eternal guardian of the deep-ridden soul, yours is the glory of the eternal domain, in you we see the hunt, in you we feel the horror, rend us and take our flesh into you and savor us in your eternity."   "Wherein their will be a single drop from the gilded nectar that will sweeten the mind of the seeker without purpose, in that moment a glory drawn from the wicked whose sins will lay fallow the gardener's embrace."
