Polestaff, which is obviously not his real name, is the latest in the long line of commanders of the Pack Rats, a mercenary company with a long, boring history of reliable grunt work and merchant marine protection. An affable, portly man with a collection of strange objects he's taken from their many campaigns, he is quick with a joke and a natural charmer. His easygoing manner belies a cunning mind for war and a solid understanding of logistics and tactics, which he has employed numerous times in the last 30 years. The Pack Rats came to Hampsterdam suddenly, pulling out of lucrative contracts with the High Dukes of Van Myr. It is unknown what exactly caused this decision but Polestaff is quick to chalk it up to new opportunities in The Discovered Lands .
