The Shadewand

The Shadewand was an extremely powerful magical artifact made in the First Age by an Elf who didn't know what he was dealing with. Using extremely old magic, he harnessed the power of the cosmos and channelled it into the Shadewand. It immediately turned on him and killed him, showing a sadistic pleasure in his death. The knowledge of how to destroy the Shadewand died with its creator, and it took full advantage of his secrecy to obliterate the elven community he had been living in. It then passed to a criminal when they were investigating the ruins. Over time, the Shadewand had many owners, evil all. It caused much destruction in its time, much of it irreparable, before it was destroyed in 2768.

History

The Shadewand was created only a few years after the Creation of Irëduin, by a nameless elf living in a small island village in the middle of the Sea. When it was created, the Shadewand instantly killed its maker, then obliterated the village. A few days later, when a criminal was scrounging around the ruins, it controlled him and made him destroy the island, then flee to the mainland. When he boasted of the immense power afforded to him by the Shadewand, he was killed by one of his 'friends' who took the Shadewand for themselves. For years, the Shadewand carved a bloody path through history, sometimes disappearing for a century or two, but always turning up again. In 1705 TA, it fell into the hands of the leader of the B'omarrin Kashar, who wielded it to great effect. A year later, he was murdered by one of his followers, who, instead of taking the mantle of leadership, fled, fearing retribution. Years later, it was discovered by the sorcerer Azartius, who killed thousands with it. In 2786, he used it to invade his old enemy Tílunur, conquering the country and enslaving its people. When the Seven Einheryari led a daring assassination attempt against him, he used the Shadewand to disarm the attackers, then threatened Tywell III with it. However, just as he prepared to kill the rebellious prince, it was destroyed by Ralthyr Wazavor, who used his magical sword Talthäyr to slice the Shadewand in half.

Powers

The Shadewand was one of the most powerful items in the history of the Seven Kingdoms, stronger even than Ahweyr, the Ring of Infinity. It was capable of blasts strong enough to kill a large group of people, mind control, and altering of the Creation. When used as a pen and using a person's blood, it had the power to alter the world. For example, if you wrote 'burn that door' with the Shadewand, it would burn the door. The stronger its wielder, the stronger it became. When it was owned by Azartius, it was at the peak of its power, and could probably have destroyed the island on which the Castle stood if the sorcerer had so wished. The Shadewand had magical wards woven about it and through it that prevented its destruction by anything but the most powerful of magic. The sword Talthäyr had been imbued with much of Ralthyr's power, and combined with Ahweyr, it was enough to utterly undo the Shadewand. Only a few other things would have had the power to do so, and only when it were wielded by its master would Talthäyr have struck so.

Personality

Unusually for an item, the Shadewand had a personality, being naturally cruel and vindictive. It delighted in the torment of others, and had a mind of its own. It would change owners as it wished, and could drive weak-minded people insane until it completely dominated them. It took delight in destruction, especially large things like islands and buildings. The nature of the Shadewand influenced its bearers, corrupting even the most stout-hearted. Throughout history, it was known as one of the most evil things ever to have existed. And for once, history did not exaggerate.
