The Rakorach

The Rakorach was the courtroom that was part of the Inner Castle Complex, along with the palace, arena, Place of Healing or Aloveris, trainee barracks, and the cathedral. In the time of Tywell III, the judge running the Rakorach was Derrick Fïlne, an esteemed member of the king's court.   The Rakorach was an imposing building, with solid columns, ornate gargoyles, and large lancet windows. In the centre of the roof was a tower, similar to a bell tower on a cathedral. This tower was used for something different, though. It was used to display when a trial was on. In the daytime, a banner was flown from the spire, with the colour depending on the importance of the defendant. When it was too dark for anyone to see the banner, a beacon would be lit in the space where a bell would go in a bell-tower. Arched openings allowed an unobstructed view of the beacon when it was lit. Colours for the banners were black, meaning a highly important criminal, red, orange, and blue, signifying a petty criminal.   The Rakorach was used to deal with criminals from the Castle, as well as larger ones abroad. Smaller courtrooms in the individual cities, towns, and sometimes villages dealt with local petty criminals, like bread thieves or individual murders. Bandit gangs were taken to the Castle to be dealt with at the Rakorach.   The Rakorach was used for the trial of Nikko and his thugs after they attacked Tywell. It was also used when the enslavement attempt in the North of Tílunur was thwarted and Tywell, Rusalye Würani, and Zÿ brought back the slavers. When the remnants of Gu B'omarrin Kashar were gradually rounded up after their defeat in 2765, they were put on trial in the Rakorach.
