Nem

Ones Resolute through Conflict

The Nem are a species of sapient, humanoid rodents that make up the majority population of the continent of Lontiss. They are divided biologically and culturally between the Kell and the Baal, the latter more related to mice while the former, rats. Specializing in foraging and cave-exploration, Nem are universally well suited for adventures involving path-finding and resource gathering.

An Eternal Divide

Nem are known throughout Tareolis for their ongoing civil war which sprouted from a combination of political favoritism amongst the Baal and the Whitetail plague which wiped out half of the Baal population. The Nem's presence in Mas'Teiel is scattered, with Kell and Baal still engaging in skirmishes across any place they have the misfortune of meeting in.

Kell: Pride and Power

In their eyes, the Kell had long been overlooked by their peers. The council which ruled most of Lontiss was composed of more Baal and it would become apparent in the years before their feud that political favoritism would push the Kell's standard of living to lower and lower degrees. With this, the majority of manual labor and lower paying jobs would fall to them and would push them to become the more physically active race. As longstanding families of craftsman and soldiers became to form, so to did pockets of rebel factions who sought to tip the balance of political power into their favor. They would grow to believe that they were the dominant side of the species, creating propaganda that the Baal were less Nem using their increasing reliance on outside races in order to provide outside luxuries as ammunition.

Traits

Language

While native Nem might not tend to understand Common, most all in Mas'Teiel are fluent. Nessant is the tongue of the Nem for as long as most recorded history can remember; it consists of squeaking sounds that are reminiscent of that of average rodents but with some cultural intricacies based on regional ethnicity. Despite their rivalry, the Baal and Kell still share the same native language due to their both claiming it to be their birthright.

Darkvision

Nem are well-equipped for spelunking both from natural evolutionary traits and their ability to travel into places most cannot, so they are excellent at seeing in low-light conditions. They are able to see in darkness as if it were dim-light, and dim-light as it were fully lit for up to 120ft. in front of them.

Cavelurker

Light-footedness and quick thinking allow the Nem to excel in staying silent and unseen. They gain proficiency in Stealth and have advantage on Stealth rolls involving concealing the sound of their footsteps.

Sub-Species

The Nem are split between two species that are linked in their ancestry but harbor a deep hatred for each other. Their genetics are similar enough to have them classified under the same race but are different enough not to be able to reproduce with one another.

  • Kell:
    +1 Str.

Kell are rat-like humanoids who retain more of their animal physique than their counterparts, but gain an advantage in strength due to their more muscular builds. Their stand-out differences are the length of their tails and their longer, more coarse fur.

    Sharp Claw

The Kell have longer natural claws than the Baal, paired with their increased average strength and they are able to outmatch most in a hand-to-hand situation. They gain a 1d6 natural weapon being their claws that they may use as an unarmed attack.

  • Baal:
    +1 Wis.

Baal are Nem whose ancestry is rooted more toward mice than rats. While Baal possess less physical prowess they are generally more intelligent, and are more well-suited for blending in with other races. Baal are defined by their usually shorter fur and tails as well as a more upright figure.

    Nimble Scurry

Using a combination of quick wit and flexibility, Nem are able to pass through the space of any Large creature when making a move action.
