    Arcopel Scientists Visit Earth
    Population Migration / Travel

A group of arcopel biologists discover Earth in the Sol system. Recognizing that humans would make excellent specimens to study the development of sapience in various environments, the scientists gather sample populations from across the world and place them in suspended animation for the 6,000 light year journey back to the scientists' native Soul Nebula - also known as the Sealed Kingdoms region.

Wurth Harkin is Merged with Chitiquish Artificial Intelligence
    Life, Career

Seeking to quell human rebellion against chitiquish control and improve worker efficiency, the consortium decides to implant thee 'alpha' of the humans' 'hive' with an artificial intelligence core and various other enhancements which will raise his intelligence while also subverting his will. Because the chitiquish do not regard humans as fully sentient at this time, however, they implement insufficient control features into these implants, allowing the very angry Wurth Harkin to eventually regain control of his own faculties and start planning towards a newer, more comprehensive slave uprising.

Successful Slave Rebellion on Ferrous Minor
    Revolution

Wurth Harkin, Shank, and other Evermornan human slaves link up with the vbyifabids Gohro and Myrden and the emoxi pilot Rechet to hijack a consortium long-haul refinery vessel. After initially absconding from the planet, Wurth uses the ship's haul of cobalt to pelt the consortium's holdings in the system with relativistic, neutron-activated debris, rendering the system unable to support life for centuries thereafter.   Horrified at the humans' chosen form of revenge, Myrden demands that the Evermornans become signatories to the Valleybridge Accords to prevent any future destruction of habitable worlds at their hands. Wurth agrees, but Shank does not; ultimately, by a narrow majority, the humans do become signatories. Nevertheless, Wurth later lets it be known that he has more irradiated cobalt impactors in reserve should anyone else threaten Evermornan independence and survival in the Sealed Kingdoms.

Great Mind Cataclysm Causes Collapse of Arcopel Interstellar Empire
    Disaster / Destruction

The arcopel's artificial commensal intelligence is corrupted by an attempt by a small group of over-eager researchers, rendering over 90% of all arcopel attached to it braindead or too damaged to survive on their own. The lethal signal propagates out from Arctopelago as a shell of electromagnetic energy expanding at the speed of light, meaning that the Cataclysm strikes the extents of the Upper Arcopel civilization long after the inciting event. Scattered arcopel communities and individuals remain unaffected, but arcopel civilization enters a steep decline, and the species ultimately disappears as a political force in the Sealed Kingdoms.

Lufthaus Romances an Arcopel Survivor on the Fordarus Gas Giant Mining Station
    Life, Trauma/ Loss

Lufthaus encounters an arcopel woman named Safti on a fuel mining platform on the gas giant Fordarus. He remains with her until she grows old, being denied the life-extending care of the now-fallen arcopel interstellar empire. On Safti's death, Lufthaus buries her by dropping her into the gas giant. He then leaves the now-empty station behind to eventually crumble and fall into the clouds below.

Post-Arcopel Chaos

904 CE 1000 CE

The major remaining technological civilizations, no longer constrained by arcopel military, technological, and political force, begin to fight one another for control over the Sealed Kingdoms. Many non-human civilizations are destroyed by relativistic bombardment during this period.

The Evermornan Slaves Return to Evermorn
    Founding

Wurth Harkin, Shank, and the other human slaves return to Evermorn with stolen technology and knowledge borne from their long exodus through the void of space. They and their descendants spend the next several hundred years uplifting their fellow Evermornans and stabilizing the geopolitical situation, leaving only the Cinnibar Hegemony and Obsidian Republic unincorporated into their new governing system. This is the foundation of the Cobalt Protectorate, then known as the Cobalt Tribal Federation.

Wurth Harkin, Shank, and Other Former Slaves Become Fully Post-Human
    Life, Identity

The implantation technology of the chitiquish consortium provides Wurth Harkin and his fellow Evermornan former slaves with the knowledge requried to artificially extend their lifespans at the expense of shedding their organic parts as they age. These are the first human cyborgs and, with time, the first HLAI. Chitiquish manufacturing and robotics techniques allow this original party to appear in humanoid artificial bodies - the first HLAI platforms - and continue their efforts without fear of decrepitude.   Now presented with all the time in the world, these ancestors pursue their own interests, occasionally returning to Evermorn to provide another dose of knowledge to the developing human societies there and ensuring that relative peace between human factions is maintained.

Vbyifabid-Chitiquish Multilateral Era

1000 CE 2200 CE

Diplomacy between the Vbyifabid and Chitiquish - the two major interstellar powers in the post-arcopel Sealed Kingdoms - leads to an era of comparative peace. The Valleybridge Accords impose strict penalties on anyone willing to use relativistic weapons on populated worlds. While occasional conflicts break out, they are typically regional in scope and last only a handful of decades at most. Human and human-adjacent species arrive on the interstellar political stage.

    Grand Harkinite Expedition
    Expedition

Wurth Harkin and a picked cadre of Cobalt Knights, known thereafter as the Harkinites, travel to numerous regions known to house abandoned arcopel research outposts. The goal of this expedition is to find any extant human or near-human populations and, if possible, put them under the protective umbrella of the newly-interstellar Cobalt Protectorate.   Most worlds are found to have once held humaniod populations, but almost all such civilizations are either regressed to pre-sentient states or long-extinct by the time that the Harkinites arrive. This causes Wurth a great deal of heartbreak and sets him on the path to eventually create a way to preserve human sentience against any eventuality. This is the inspiration for the Evermorn Strategic Colony Initiative and, later, Wurth's Matrioshka Brain.

    The Midnight
    Disaster / Destruction

Wurth Harkin, disgusted with the continued slave-taking and human sacrifice of the Magocracy of Lepidos, takes sides with a monotheistic splinter faction on Lepidos. Wurth, the Cobalt Knights, and the rebels use atomic weapons to topple the regime, but leave the planet scarred and polluted in the aftermath.   Horrified by the moral implications of this action, Wurth foreswears such violent interventions in the future and directs his efforts to discovering, conserving, and uplifting any further near-human civilizations he might find. The League of Lepidosian City-States rises in the aftermath of the Midnight with the assistance of Wurth's cadre of Knights, becoming one of the first near-human member states of the Cobalt Protectorate.

Wurth Harkin and the Cobalt Knights Establish Contact
    Discovery, Exploration

Wurth Harkin and his cadre of Cobalt Knights discover Feldea, a world that harbors a near-human race they dubbed the Feldeans. Feldea is undergoing ecological collapse as a result of over-industrialization. The Evermornans establish ramediation and rejuvenation efforts, but the climate catastrophe has left the Feldean culture jaded and decadent in the face of what they assumed would be unavoidable extinction. Some Feldeans resent the intervention, reasoning that it was their right to 'go on their own acceptance,' but others appreciate the Harkinites' efforts.   Some Cobalt Knights remain behind when Wurth and the rest of the Harkinites move on, establishing orbital colonies for population in excess of what the planet can handle in its current state. Feldea becomes the second non-human memeber state to the Cobalt Protectorate in 1760.

A Black Hole Passes Through the Alpha Xymeria System, Raising Karst's Aphelion
    Celestial

A rogue black hole passes through the Alpha Xymeria System, rearranging the planetary orbits and causing asteroids to careen through the system. While this seeds the inner system with asteroids rich in mineable mineral wealth, it also eventually sends the planet Karst into an ice age. The Karstineans' information-age society begins to break down as food starts to become more scarce and the national governments mishandle the situation.

The Xymeria Ice & Mineral Mining Platform Discovers the Humanoid Civilization on Cornelius
    Discovery, Exploration

Xymeria Ice & Mineral is a corporate entity owned and operated by a HLAI named Windwise, who is also the shipboard artificial intelligence for an itinerant mining platform named the ECV XIM Windwise. En route to retrieve an asteroid from Alpha Xymeria for processing, Windwise's long-range sensors detect a planet in Beta Xymeria which showed new signs of orbital infrastructure.   Windwise launches a probe in the direction of Beta Xymeria with one of his daughter HLAIs aboard. This daughter found that the planet Cornelius possessed a human-like civilization with city-sized mechanical computers and petroleum- and induction-powered industry in lieu of electronics. Due to difficulties stemming from the intense electromagnettic tides of the gas giant Cornelius orbits, it took the daughter HLAI three years to formally make contact with this civilization. Windwise forwarded these findings to the Cobalt Protectorate for future conservation efforts.
