Inevitable is a powerful sword that cuts the time of its victim rather than their flesh. Those struck by the dark weapon age, their future days and years drawn into the blade.

Description

Inevitable is a two-handed sword with a long hilt to compensate for the dangers of gripping the blade. The blade is made of an unknown, transparent metal without blemish despite centuries of use. It is a perfect rectangle, with a blunt end with an intricate carving down into the metal. The edges look sharp, but the blade doesn't cut inanimate objects.

It has a simple cross-guard and a hefty pommel, with no decoration on any part of the weapon. Owners of the sword sometimes embellish it by hanging charms and jewelry off the hilt, but these rarely survive for long. The hilt has been reforged half a dozen times, possessing no magic of its own. It is currently made of oak and wrapped in leather

Properties

"Killing time" in a whole new way.

Inevitable does not cut the mortal body; its blade will pass through targets and leave them seemingly unharmed, until they feel the strength sap from their limbs and their flesh shrivel. The sword cuts days, months, and years of life from its victim, with time severed corresponding to how lethal the blow might have been. In some ways, Inevitable is much less deadly than a weapon made of simple steel. A strike that would cleave a man in twain will leave him a decade older instead.

The time that Inevitable carves from its victims are gathered in the blade and eventually buds into small gems of magical energy along the top of it. The gems are similar to appearance to various fruit and contain a rare essence of chronomancy. They are highly sought after all things that use magic as one of the most refined types of magic gem there is.

The more that Inevitable has drunk of days and years, the sharper the outline of the blade will become. Fully charged, it is a crystallized moment in time.

Alien Origin

Though a handful of gods and archfiends claim to have crafted the blade, no one knows for certain. The Inevitable kills memories of itself for more than a few dozen years, reducing them to a murky haze of missing time. Some speculate the sword is from another world entirely, deposited here by disaster or wicked design.

Time Crystals

The Inevitable is not a powerful weapon on its own. It is the gems made from murder that have made Inevitable such a highly prized object. Mages and gods alike desire the blade, with genocide in mind - populations culled for harvest with the Inevitable. All magical gems can be used to bolster spells and fuel powerful rituals or infuse them with fresh magical energy. The ones made by Inevitable are particularly refined and sought after by those who seek magical means to avoid their own inevitable end.
