The Roots of the Sea

The main branch of The Roots collects in the Scepter valley from a thousand rivulets, streams, and runoffs, where the tributaries flow into into a wide and slow moving river that moves south along the valley where it picks up speed significantly as it runs through the icy crags of the Spine of the World's southern-most base, and from there into the Sea of Swords. Where the river runs fast, it has been artificially cleared of the more dangerous obstacles, and retrofitted with a modern station on either side where galleys and barges are fitted with a system of harnesses attached to mounts that aid in the expedition northward.
Significant ports include Poor Boy's Dock at Southbridge, where much of the trade offloads into Gavenlow and its sister port at the mouth of the river on the western coast of Faerun, Twinsport. Twinsport, although constructed in modern times under the supervision of the Green Twins, is too far from the Scepter to be treated as a priority, and though it reports to Gavenlow, and pays taxes and tribute to the captial, its governance is largely independent.
Its main industry is, of course, trade. Fish and trade.
