Omosai, the Drowned City

History

City of Farmer

Omosai was once considered one of the most food-rich settlements in Taisen. Since its founding, it was a farming settlement and would continue to be one long after it became a city. It can feed its large population thanks to its rich soil and control over the Azure River through the tremendous Honzu Dam built into the Sparkling Falls to control water flow in the region. Allowing it controls the flow of water into the city's rice fields. This large amount of food would feed many settlements across the north and save thousands of lives with its massive grain stores in times of drought and famine. Along with diversifying their crops to become luxury goods to increase their regional income. However, with time, these farmers would be controlled by the wealthy, and many minorities would be forced to work on them for little pay while their fellow Kenjunese brethren could live with full bellies. It was an easy life for those who were able to work their farms as the dam was able to help regulate their crops in a time of drought and renew the soil so it would dry out. Making it one of the wealthiest cities in the region at the time, but its greed often got in the way. The city was infamous for controlling the supplies of food in the region. It would completely halt in ultimately if rebellions in the area starved out the rebels and the many innocents. Causing many from the outside to despise it as they lost their loved ones wither away and perish in front of them   However, there was another problem with the dam they built, which also caused ecological problems. While the Azure river still existed as water flowed through it, it wasn't as large as it used to be. This would become a problem during certain times as the river would dry up due to how low it was in times of drought. Causing settlements that relied on the river to suffer as they lacked water and food from it, it also made farming harder in these regions. The city was often the problem of all the suffering, and they would exploit the people by making them pay for their food and water with what they could afford. The city would play with life and prosper while all those around them would suffer. It would be done for centuries, and things only began to get worse as time went on until finally, the city would meet its end as all the anger built up and would find itself at its very gates.

Final Days

In the final years of the Shogunate, the city would find itself under siege by the rebels known as the Liberators of Taisen, led by the infamous Koh Su Ren, a man that killed any Kenjuese within his grasp. His army ransacked and slaughtered countless settlements until they reached Omosai and laid siege to it. The city would be under siege for over a year, with neither side giving up as they killed one another. Over time the city was evacuated little by little to save food and ensure that if the city was breached, the entire population was not massacred with Dragon Ships as much as they could until enemy rocket artillery made it difficult with time. The city would begin to run out of food while the enemy would be growing food outside the settlements on their very own farms. Several attempts were made to break the city, but they failed thanks to its defenders. Koh Su Ren did not wish to destroy the city as he wanted to claim it for his people and become its master, But his patience was growing thin, and he wanted to move his armies farther south to destroy as many Kenjuese settlements as possible. The defenders sent out messages for reinforcements, but they never came as rebellions were popping up all over the Shogunate. It was until a message arrived that would seal the city's fate forever and within its walls.   The message would come from the Shogun himself, Ashubu Daito, and it was a direct order for all Shogunate forces to retreat to their homeland of Kenju to defend it from total annihilation. The lord and defender of the city, Denshi Komori, knew if the city fell, thousands of his people would be killed by the rebels once they gained control of it. So he devised a plan to destroy the city and the rebel army with it. He would load one of his remaining Dragon Ship with what remained of the city's Black Powder, destroy the Honzu Dam, and flood the entire city. But to ensure the rebels were washed away along with it, he would allow the city's walls to be breached and hope the rebel army would charge right in. But he knew it would only work if he and the remaining defenders stayed behind to allow the trap to work. He would entrust the dam's destruction to his eldest son, Kenji, to ensure his survival after the city's destruction and send the rest of his family away with what few civilians were left. He would then allow the enemy to destroy the city gates and his plans began to work as they were to charge through it and kill all in their path. Kenji would then make his way to the dam but was intercepted by an enemy Dragon Ship that tried to destroy him. Seeing that the plan was not going as planned, he had much of the ship evacuated and rammed the enemy ship as they both crashed into the dam, and Kenji narrowly escaped with his life. Both ships exploded with enough force to destroy the dam, and a great flood soon came crashing down, washing away everything in their path. It was said that a flood survivor saw Komori and his remaining Samurai would commit Seppuku to regain their honor as they were washed away by the flood.

Lost in the Water

The flood would wipe out the Liberator army, and Koh Su Ren would also be killed, stopping the rebel's advance as their losses were too heavy and allowing many Kenjuese to flee safely back to their homeland. Denshi Komori and the defenders would be hailed as heroes for their sacrifice, and the newly rejuvenated Azure river would swallow the city. With bodies washing up along its riverbeds for years until it finally returned to normal. The city would never be recovered as it was now a part of the river, and the land around it would recover with time. However, the city's ruins will appear during the dry season when the water recedes. Being a reminder of a different age that has all but ended with nothing of it remaining.

Great article! What a creative way to have the city wash away and have it serve as a reminder every dry season.
