The Vynerian Guild
The Vynerian Guild is an extremely secretive organisation, which is entirely female. It began as a training establishment for orphaned girls, and became established as Oraqk's covert intelligence organisation. In the modern era many political changes have forced the Vynerian Guild to adapt, and it is now devoted to the defence of the Mekharian Empire. The female members of the guild operate in clandestine operations, often by hire and for a fee. They are often referred to as The Twin Guns, which originated from a newspaper headline from the 1940's which included a blurred image of a masked woman holding two pistols. The Guild performs a variety of roles from infiltration and intelligence gathering, to interrogations and assassinations. However, within the Vynerian Guild there is a legacy of community and education that still plays a major part of the Guild's day to day running, even in the modern world.
Structure
The Council of Elders - Blada d Ersdare
The Vynerian Guild is governed and controlled by a council of five elders. The primary role of the Elders is to ensure that the codes and traditions of the guild are followed and maintain it's continued existence. The Elders have the power to punish those within the guild who damage it's reputation in any way. The position of Elder is the highest in the guild, and elevation to Elder may only occur when a previous Elder has died. The remaining four Elders then elect a new Elder by majority vote. An elected Elder can come from any part of the Guild's organisation, but the majority are those who have been successful as operatives.
Members - Usulian
All members of the Vynerian Guild are given a specific role when they graduate from the Guild's training program. These roles are delegated by their instructors, based on their performance and test scoring. Very few members of the Vynerian Guild ever become field operatives, but it is the aim of most to achieve this target. Some become instructors themselves, while others are chosen for their skills in innovation or analysis for greater supporting roles within the Vynerian Guild. However, many members of the guild are tasked to work in far less glamorous roles, such as those in the nurseries, kitchens or gardens.
History
During the Sixth Century after the discovery of Carinthe's message, an eastern nomadic hoard known as the Oraquai moved into the void left by the collapsing Latian Empire, heading for a promised land. By the time they reached the city of Orynq, where they eventually settled, many battles had been fought and won, and many lives lost. Gemeti Amata was barely thirteen when her father and brother were both killed in battle against a Legion of the Latian Empire. Suddenly an orphan, Gemeti realised that she was not alone in her plight. The Oraquai had hundreds of orphaned children, but while the boys were trained to fight like their father's before them, the girls were neglected and often abused. Gemeti however, was not content to be just another orphan. In the remains of a Latian villa, she created a shelter for orphan girls, and taught them how to survive. By the time she was twenty, she had more than forty followers, all of them rescued orphans. They called their new home the House of Vyneria, and soon became synonymous with saving lives.
Education
The Vynerian Guild was founded as an orphanage for girls, and that remains the case today. All members are recruited before the age of 8, and must either be an orphan or offered to the guild by the child's parents. Many of the guild's infants are born into the guild by it's own members. Marriage is forbidden within the Vynerian Guild, but members and even operatives are encouraged to bare children in order to provide the guild with members for the generations to come. However, all children within the guild are considered orphans, and the parents are prevented from ever knowing the identity of their child. All new recruits are given a name designated by the guild based upon the year and day of intake. No two guild members can ever have the same name within the same century.
All students are trained in from their recruitment at a young age until they are old enough to be selected as an apprentice. Formal education begins from the age of 3 for those recruited from birth or infancy. For the lucky few, they may be become an apprentice anywhere between the ages of 14 and 16. For those who reach 16 without being selected, their lives are dictated by the other attributes they have displayed during their training and education. All students spend time training in every possible role, from cooking and cleaning, to gardening and raising children. Those who stand out with specific artistic or technical skills can be selected for training in other areas that directly support the work of the Guild's operatives.
The original concept of the Vynerian Guild was created in The YoungWorld by a member known as The Twin Guns. She established the basic principles of the guild and several of the main characters. However, the majority of the guild and it's infrastructure was fleshed out by myself on the previous OBI forum across several role plays.
