Half-hourglass

Half-hourglasses are magical artifacts that were used by Nimite magicians prior to the Collision in order to quickly travel back and forth between the islands of the Rippled Sea. They have since been left behind, scattered across the islands, a remnant of the magicians. Rarely is one found by itself (the magicians often used several at a time), and rarely are they found for sale; no one has yet learned how to reproduce them, and as a result, they are quickly bought by the authorities, collectors, or adventurers when they appear on the market.

Variations

They are found in two variations: a complete half-hourglass or a half-hourglass half (literally, half of a half-hourglass).

Half-hourglass

Wondrous Item You may speak a command word (the command word is shared for all half-hourglasses: "time"), and tip the half-hourglass upside down. This begins the 30-minute process of orienting the half-hourglass to a location, during which time the it cannot be moved, else the process is interrupted. If it is disturbed, the sand continues to magically cascade from the first bulb into the second bulb, regardless of the effect that gravity would otherwise have on it, and continues cascading until the 30-minute period has passed. At this point, the sand is completely contained in the second bulb, and the half-hourglass is oriented to its location; if it was disturbed and the process interrupted, the orientation process may now be restarted.
Once the half-hourglass has been oriented to a location, you may speak a second command word (this command word is also shared for all half-hourglasses: "flies"), and tip it upside down again (such that the bulb with the sand in it is on top) as a bonus action to instantly teleport yourself to that location (assuming you're on the same plane of existence; otherwise, it has no effect). Once there, the sand begins to magically cascade into the empty bulb, a process which takes 30 minutes. Once the sand has finished cascading into the once-empty bulb, you automatically teleport back. You may speak the command word before the sand finishes cascading, at which point you teleport back and the sand continues to cascade until the end of the 30-minute period.
After the half-hourglass has been used to teleport to a location, it loses its orientation to that location, and must be re-oriented to a location before it can be used to teleport, again. If you teleport using the half-hourglass, and then teleport back before the 30-minute period has passed, it cannot be re-oriented until the sand has finished cascading.
Once the half-hourglass has been oriented to a location, it must be used to teleport to that location before it can be re-oriented to another location.
If you tip the half-hourglass upside down without speaking the command word, the sand is magically contained within one bulb and will not cascade.
Rare

A half-hourglass (indistinguishable from an hourglass until it is used). They come in many different aesthetic designs: wood, metal, engraved, simple, ornate, etc.

Cost: 1,000 gp Weight: 5lb

Half-hourglass Half

Wondrous Item You may speak a command word (the command word is shared for all half-hourglasses: "time"), and tip the half-hourglass half upside down, pouring the sand within the bulb out. This begins the 30-minute process of orienting the half-hourglass half to a location, during which time the it cannot be moved, else the process is interrupted. If it is disturbed, the sand is magically sucked back into the bulb, regardless of the effect that gravity would otherwise have on it, over a period of time equal to the amount of time that it took for the sand to cascade out. At this point, the sand has completely emptied from the bulb, and the half-hourglass half is oriented to its location; if it was disturbed and the process interrupted, the orientation process may be restarted after the sand has been completely sucked back into the bulb.
Once the half-hourglass half has been oriented to a location, you may speak a second command word (this command word is also shared for all half-hourglasses: "flies") with it in your hand as a bonus action to instantly teleport yourself to that location (assuming you're on the same plane of existence; otherwise, it has no effect). Once there, you automatically teleport back after 30 minutes. You may speak the command word before then with the half-hourglass half in your hand, at which point you teleport back. Once you teleport back, the half-hourglass half loses its magic and becomes a totally mundane half of a half-hourglass.
If you press two half-hourglass halves together and speak both command words ("time flies"), they magically combine and transform into a half-hourglass. The sand inside one of the bulbs magically disappears during this process. If one of the halves has already been oriented to a location, and is empty of sand, the now complete half-hourglass retains that orientation. If both of the halves have already been oriented, they cannot be combined into a half-hourglass.
If you tip the half-hourglass half upside down without speaking the command word, the sand is magically contained within and will not cascade.
‌ Uncommon

Half of a half-hourglass; a glass bulb partially filled with sand (unless otherwise oriented) and held within a framing structure of somekind. As opposed to a complete half-hourglass, there is a base below the bulb, but there is no base on top of the bulb to impede the sand from spilling out of the single bulb's neck. They come in many different aesthetic designs: wood, metal, engraved, simple, ornate, etc.

Cost: 500 gp Weight: 2.5lb

Note to the DM
Note that half-hourglasses do not need to be attuned before they can be used. Therefore, you may wish to give your players a half-hourglass that has already been oriented to a mysterious, unknown location...

Should the second one be a quarter hour glass? Is it 15 minutes to reorient? Fun idea and good item if it is generating questions on use in readers heads!

Hey George, good questions... I wanted to keep the design as similar to the complete half-hourglass, save for the fact that it's a consumable item. Per the timing, you could definitely play with it and shorten it to just 15 minutes (or less!).
