River Elf Cuisine

The culinary tastes of river elves tend to be rather varied, partially due to the variety of food options that live right in or around the rivers they call home, and partially because their fairly central geographical location allows them to trade with a wide variety of other cultures.   As they live on a river, their diet naturally consists of a lot of fish and other forms of seafood. There are also a large number of vegetables and grains that grow well on the fertile riverbanks, and spices from the southeast are a common import. In addition to all of this, river elves tend to have a rather notable penchant for sweets. Sugarcane grows very well along the banks of their rivers, which makes them one of the largest exporters of sugar to the rest of the world - though they keep the majority of it for themselves.   A large number of river elves also live in and near forests, as they both take up much of the central lands the river elves call home, and often contain a lot of rivers. This opens up nuts, game, berries, and other resources to their culinary uses, further aiding their variety.   Despite all of this, there are a few general tendencies among their culinary traditions. Sweets are much more commonplace and not often reserved for celebrations or rare treats. That is a role taken much more by spicy or sour foods, as those flavors typically have to be imported from fairly distant lands. Vegetables, fruit, and grain tend to be the main staple of their meals, with meat not serving as a rarity but typically a smaller portion on the side of some meals, or in small amounts as a flavoring.   One of their more unusual habits in incorporating reeds and cattails into some of their meals, something many humans find to be rather strange, as they are both difficult for humans to eat and not particularly flavorful. However, according to river elven cookbooks, they pair quite nicely with the right mixture of berries.
