Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Chime of the Living is a small hand bell with the power to stave off the dead. It is a beautiful silver, with a clear crystal clapper. The handle has small patterns of vines engraved in it, easy to miss if you don’t look closely. When rung it lets out a pure ringing noise. The bell appears to have no effect. However, when rung in the presence of undead it acts to keep them away. It creates a sort of invisible barrier that holds the undead back. It does not harm them, and the bell must be rung every 30 seconds to keep up the effect.

Significance

Supposedly the chime of the living was made by a powerful cleric and a master metalworker. The village they lived in had been having trouble with the undead. The mage and metalworker had been working to create something that would protect the village until help could be received from the capital. They hoped to create a large bell for the town temple, but did not have access to enough materials. The cleric took a old candlestick, supposedly a relic of his god, and gave it to the metalworker. She melted it down and used it to create two small bells. She engraved it with signs of life; vines, flowers, small animals. The cleric then blessed it, assumedly using some sort of protection spell. Unable to protect the entire town with these small bells, they gave them to their two children. A few nights later the undead rose again. Few is known, and much of what is known is guesses, about the creation of the bells because the cleric and metalworker died that night, killed by the undead. The next morning the help the town had been promised arrived, to find the town mostly destroyed except for two young children, clutching the bells.
