Olympus Goat

Anatomy

The Olympus Goat is a herbivorous goat-antelope native to the great heights of Mt. Olympus, after which they are named. Notably larger than domesticated goats, they can grow to be 1.5-2 meters tall and possess a strong, muscular build. Due to their hostile habitat, Olympus Goats have evolved to have significantly larger lungs than other similar species, which allows them to take in and process more oxygen per breathe, which is vital to their survival at high altitudes.   Olympus Goats also possess a disproportionally large spleen, which stores a significant amount of oxygen-rich red blood cells, allowing them to survive for long periods of time in low-oxygen environments. In fact, when combined, most of an Olympus Goat's body weight is taken up by its respiratory system.   A thick layer of fur insulates the creature, allowing them to withstand temperatures of up to -58°C (-72°F) and winds of up to 160 kilometers per hour (99 mph). To defend itself, the goat relies predominantly on fleeing, using its strong legs to outrun predators, although it can fight with its two long, black horns which can be quite deadly. Although uncommon, there have been reports of cornered goats killing hunters.

Diet and Reproduction

Olympus Goats are herbivores, primarily feeding on the few florae which grow atop Mt. Olympus. On rare occasions, they may descend the mountain if they are unable to find anything to feed on top of the mountain. Olympus Goats have few predators, as few animals can stomach the altitudes in which they are usually found. Even when they descend the mountain, their size makes them dangerous prey that few predators bother hunting.   Olympus Goat mate with multiple partners during the breeding season, although most find a singular, permanent mate after a few years. During the period where the female has not yet bonded for life, she will remain with a herd of goats, traveling with them whilst siring her offspring. Upon meeting a life partner, the pair will leave the herd with their offspring to live independently as a family. For a time, this herd will only contain the parents and their offspring, however gradually the family will begin adopting either the last member of another family or offspring from herds that are too large. Goats within a family do not rejoin any herds, and the family ends when the last member joins another family as an adopted member.

Habitat and Behaviour

Olympus Goats are found exclusively on top of the shield volcano Olympus, likely evolving from domestic goats who escaped during the collapse. They are usually found at altitudes ranging from 25,000 - 60,000 ft and are specially adapted to thrive in the mountain's hostile environment.   Olympus Goats are relatively docile towards humans unless overtly threatened, likely a side-effected due to their evolutionary path. It's possible to pet one without too much risk, although it's advised to stay away from pregnant females and kids. Attempts to domesticate the species have failed, as the creature does not produce anything and has a significantly shorter lifespan if it spends too much time at lower altitudes.
Lifespan: 33-41 years   Average Height: 5.5 Feet   Threat Classification: Low
