Equus Mechanica
Overview
The term 'Equus Mechanica' refers to a range of dynamically stable quadruped robots that were once extremely commonplace across Mars, being utilized for various civilian and military purposes. Although not as prevalent as they once were, Equus Mechanica is still the most accessible form of transportation available to the people of Mars. Able to carry people and goods vast distances on negligible amounts of fuel, they are most commonly utilized by trade caravans to carry large quantities of goods that humans cannot carry.Design
Although Equus Mechanica comes in a variety of designs, most do not radically deviate from the basic design. Most units are powered by a two-stroke, one-cylinder, 15-brake-horsepower engine which uses either bio-fuel or pre-collapse processed fuel. Some rare models are instead powered by a solar panel and battery, which are highly sought-after by the more wealthy merchants. Four hydraulic legs allow the unit to move, and a basic onboard AI can follow routes, navigate rough terrain and avoid natural threats. Larger models can carry up to 390 pounds, although this can be increased by adding extra legs. Optional extras, such as high-powered lights, a water purifier, and a small microwave are also found on some models.Usage
Equus Mechanica are most commonly used as pack mules, hence they are most often found in the possession of traders, wanderers, and scavengers. Larger bandit groups may also use them to assist in transporting stolen goods and, in some cases, slaves. Organized paramilitary and military organizations also extensively use them as logistical workhorses, and most larger formations have a few on hand to transport ammunition or equipment.
