Red Mange
Normal mange is an infection of skin mites that lay eggs in the skin and is commonly treated in farming communities with salves made of honey, verdigris, Hellebore and walnut oil.
Red Mange however is not caused by mites but it's early symptoms are similar to normal mange before Redding.
It is transferred from an infected humanoid or animal host via skin contact, body fluid or saliva. It's route of infection is through the skin which damages it and the hair follicles, Leaving a bald patch of fur and itchy scabby skin.
If ingested or sexually transmitted the early symptoms are hidden.
Mosquitoes and other blood drinking pests and parasites die immediately after consumption of infected host blood.
A dead host can spread Red mange as the disease is still active several days after death, carrion creatures the size of a rat will die instantly upon consumption of infected flesh.
Burning the corpse will destroy the infection completely.
Infectious blood that is outside the body for over a minute will become inert, Extreme cold can also kills the infection.
Stages of infection
First stage
For a week it will look like mange and will be treated by normal methods, which does not stop it. If the infection is ingested or transferred through intimacy, The symptoms are hidden. They are not infectious to others at his stageSecond stage
In 2 weeks the patch will redden and spread rapidly, with scabby skin in larger patches. If the infection is ingested or sexually transmitted, The victims fur or/and hair will fall out in large clumps. They are infectious via bodily fluids but not skin to skin contact.Third stage
At three weeks, the body is completely bald and red. The skin's epidermis layer is completely deteriorated. The skin will constantly be moist with clear infectious puss. Their behavior is erratic and aggressive with everyone. Attempting to talk to them at this stage is impossible. They will try to grab, bite and claw any living thing to pass on the infection. The infected do not attack other infected and its not uncommon to see them roaming in groups or hiding in caves and shelters during winter. The infected will eat Food, Corpses of other infected/uninfected or dead wildlife. It will not hunt and kill anything as its main purpose is to spread the infection. If there is no Food, Dead animals or Humanoid corpses for it to feed on, They will starve to death.Infected pregnant women
Pregnant women will not pass on the infection at stage one and two. If the infection worsens to stage three, It will affect the fetus depending on its stage of development. At the embryonic stage, The fetus will mutate into a monstrous spawnling. A dangerous creature that will grow into a giant skinless horror. If the baby is at advance stage of development, The infection will kill the unborn child and cause the mother to miscarriage.Treatment
First and second stages of infection can not be cured with medicine or healing potions. Miracle magic or Healing magic is the only effective cure. The Celvic temple has helped stop the spread during the time they controlled the realms. However after the temple's overthrow, The People have little trust for them and a majority of them will not go to them for aid. If a Magic healer is not available, Which is the case in rural areas. Incarceration till starvation, Burning alive in cages or killing them on the spot have been the preferred choice of containment. Infected victims fearing the latter flee into the wilderness spreading the infection further. At Third stage it is too late and no magic can save the victim. Resurrection spells does no cure the infection. If the tissue sample is infected for a Clone spell, It will develop into a Skinless horror.Origins
Celvic temple and Alchemists researchers, Believes the origins of red mange is a magical creation. It's immunity to the best Alchemist medicines, Anathema to healing magic and it's appearance during and after the shattered realm war, points to this. It's not completely agreed on that Marnaru was its creator. It's a hard disease to exterminate as it is carried by all manner of monsters, Which has confounded researchers into why it does not affect them. A monster with the infection can transfer it with blood to skin contact or ingesting it. Other body fluids strangely does not contain the disease, nor can it be transferred by touch.Affects on non-animal folk
Errantans (Humans, Dwarves, Elves, etc) cannot get infected or carry it, They are completely immune. Only those of The Moulded Native inhabitants of Celvar'wen can get Red Mange. Stage 3 infected will try to infect Errantans, Biting them continuously. The mindless attacks will continue until ether one is dead. But they can get normal mange, Which can be mistaken or believed to be red mange.
