The Dark Riders

For months now, The Nomads of the Plains of Kataru have been fighting a war on two fronts, and they seem to be losing. First, a charismatic woman named Milaconi has been convincing lesser tribes to abandon their loyalty and join her Dark Riders. Second, the Dark Riders have managed to win just about every battle with the nomads that they've engaged in.
They aren't only interested in fighting the nomads, though - the Dark Riders have swept through towns and aldeias, demanding tribute and performing executions if townsfolk don't provide it. Traveling across the plains has become far more dangerous than it used to be, because the Dark Riders demand tolls from travelers they encounter. Any traveler refusing to pay the toll is tied to a cross naked before a substance is poured onto their feet. After a few hours, the substance grows into a fungus, which takes a few days to completely consume the poor soul. In that time, they babble nonsense, but sometimes utter words and phrases that some have taken as prophecy.
There have been no successful attempts to remove the fungus without killing its victim, but people have started standing vigil over those dying, convinced that their days of babble include prophetic words of import. In the northern plains, it is said that one such death had over a hundred witnesses, and that an Aeon Priest present for the death went home, packed his things, and immediately journeyed east, to Augur-Kala.
