Pointer Salve / Creshnal's Apology

Pointer Salve is a medical ointment developed and utilized by Cohorts of the Dominion of Deimos, derived from ritualistic practices of Iyntali shamans.   During the early expansion wars of the Iyntali Plains, settlers from the Dominion of Deimos began encroaching on the lands of the Iyntali tribes, some with the intention of battle and conquest, and others hoping for a more peaceful resolution. These settlers were often exiled refugees following the Scar Exodus from the Dominion, wherein House Deimos ordered and outfitted thousands of lower class families for an expansion to the west, as the Dominion was unable able to feed and support its current population following the devastation of a large swath of vital Dominion farmlands.   Early traders with the Iyntali tribes were introduced to their various rituals and practices, most memorable being the Sky March and the Flame Dance. To prove bravery, strength, speed, endurance, and wit, young Iyntali warriors would dance wildly through a maze of bonfires that were erected and maintained by the elder Iyntali shamans. Those who completed the dance to the end were hailed as the bravest of the Iyntali, and given lead in the next hunt or battle that the tribe would face. Many would suffer a variety of minor and serious burns from this dance, but the Iyntali treated these burns with a special ointment. The ointment was made using the churned and mashed roots of the local Halloth flower, which was then mixed with an oil like substance that sweated from Burnish trees that grew near the center of the plains. This ointment provided immediate relief to even the most severe burns and quickened the healing process for minor to serious burns. Although the ointment would not save from burns that threatened someone's life. The Iyntali tribes called this ointment Creshnal's Apology, a named derived from a local myth about a feared fire creature. The ointment was often made by the tribal shamans, as they would travel to the central plains for yearly conclaves with other shamans and they would gather the necessary ingredients on these journeys.   When the Dominion began pressing its Cohorts into the plains to exact more direct control over its eastern frontier, the professional soldiers of the Dominion learned of the ointment as well and put it to new use. The ointment was often utilized by Dominion soldiers who specialized in quick-flame sorcery, a minor arcane art used to augment the martial arsenal of the professional Dominion soldiers. A sword thrust or an axe blow can be extra effective when an offhand strike could deliver an unexpected burst of deadly flame magic. Often such quick flame was deployed from the point of a finger in a pinpoint burst of flame, which could backdraft onto the user's fingers causing the reckless or untrained to be scorched and burned. As such, the medicine would often be seen being used by soldiers tenderly applying the healing ointment to the tips of their fingers and became known as Pointer Salve. In a grim ironic twist, what was once a revered aspect of Iyntali ritual was now used to assist the eventual conquest of their lands by the Dominion of Deimos.

Utility

Primarily used for the soothing and healing of minor to severe burns. Will not provide healing for life threatening burns, but may provide relief until expiration. Some soldiers of the Dominion Cohorts remark that the salve can be used as a flavoring agent, if one is desperate and the Cohort cook is especially bad. The ointment adds a smokey flavor to most foods, but often leaves one's mouth numb and partially paralyzed for up to a day. Some soldiers crudely joke that the ointment can be used on one's private parts for relief from a variety of sexual diseases or to increase one's libido. Neither usage is sanctioned by Cohort apothecaries or chirurgeons and explicitly warned against.
Access & Availability
Readily Accessible based on harvesting of Halloth Flowers and Burnished Oils from the Iyntali plains. As the ingredients can be transported without issue, Pointer Salve can be found outside the Iyntali plains.
Complexity
The basis of the ointment is mashed and churned roots suspended in tree sap oil, as such its complexity is minor.
Discovery
Discovered at an unknown date and time by Iyntali Shamans prior to conquest of the Iyntali plains by the Dominion of Deimos.
