Maestro Crystal (maes·tro crys·tal)

Maestro Crystals are little understood artifacts of First Empire make. These crystals and their accompanying tools are dedicated to the transcription of musical sounds and song into a written form. The crystals are exceptionally rare with most being lost to history due to physical mishandling or magical misapplication. The construction of such items are also lost to history, as their design and artifice was lost along with the fall of the First Empire. As such, most crystals are in the hands the wealthy or dedicated experts, with wealthy patrons.

Purpose and Use

When powered with a thread of air magic the crystal will suspend itself three feet off the ground or one foot off a specialized holding device known as a Cantoozi Circuit. The crystal remains suspended and active for a length of time ranging from one minute to fifteen minutes. The length of time that a crystal will remain active is often denoted by its size - the bigger the crystal the longer it can remain active. While active, the crystal will absorb sounds from the nearby area, storing them as energy within its crystalline structure. When this time has expired the crystal will gently lower and lightly pulsate with noticeable light, often in time with the song or music it just witnessed. From there the crystal can either be attached to an accompanying maestro pen or placed into a Cantoozi Circuit. Each crystal has only a single pen or single circuit attuned to it, and losing either will result in a loss of capability for the crystal as they cannot be simply swapped out with another similar item.   When attached to a matching pen the crystal will guide a writer in transcribing the music or song it previously witnessed. The song can either be written out in Imperial common, or Cantoozi Musical Verse, depending on the desire and skill of the writer.   When the crystal is placed in the holding device, its gathered energy will be disbursed into the holding device, which will allow the crystal to be re-used to witness a new song or music. These devices are made of metals resonated with threads of air and earth. Upon the holding device small etched leylines will glow with the collected energy, denoting a specialized closed circuit leyline designed for the transfer of energy to and from the Maestro crystal. These leylines can further be activated with threads of earth magic to replay the energy that was collected so an artist can assess and critique the work. The Cantoozi Circuit specifically facilitates the transcribing of long music pieces or entire concerto compositions.   It has been noted by those of more unsophisticated thinking and nefarious undertaking that nothing stops a Maestro Crystal and its accoutrements from being utilized to simply witness and transcribe non-musical-dedicated voices or other events that rely on sound. Most holders of such prized items scoff at the notion, believing it would corrupt the refined and peaceful nature of the devices to be used for anything but the exploration and creation of music.
