Mechanicals

The first Mechanicals designed a system of symbols which allowed them to harness the basic forces of the planet. Armed with these inscriptions, water, wind, and fire became theirs to control, and the others on the planet worshipped them as gods.   Though Mechanicals focus their magical works on the production of technology, they conduct magic through the use of stones, on which they write symbols that are associated with an ancient pantheon of gods, believed now to be the first Mechanicals. Each stone holds a spell, which can be activated by the person who wrote it. Sometimes stones can be activated by others, but most Mechanicals embed locks into their spells, which make it difficult for others to access them.

Training

Those who grow up in Mechanical communities begin learning magic at a young age. They learn not only from their parents, but also in school, where basic magic concepts are part of the school curriculum, alongside math, science, history, reading, and writing. But working magic is considered an artform very much like writing. While students early on learn the physcial how tos, such as what different symbols represent, the actual production develops through practice. Therefore, young Mechanicals are encouraged to tinker with spells and spell stones until they can develop spells that work for them. As they get older, they are taught how to lock spells so that they cannot be used by outsiders. But Mechanicals will also frequently compete in competitions with one another, in which they bet the same spells that they use to compete. The loser removes any locks from their spells and relinquishes them to the winner. Most Mechanicals carry their stones in a small bag, so they have them available whenever necessary. Though Mechanical spells can cover a wide variety of uses, their most common uses are in the development of technology, and Mechanicals are often behind new inventions.

Structure and Location

Most Mechanicals grow up in communities which tend to be meritocracies. These communities are usually hidden from outsiders with the use of magic. They can be found all over Svene, and though Mechanicals around the world have a shared mythos and traditions (such as the spell competitions), they do not have an umbrella structure which covers all of them.
