Grand Adventure first logbook

In 1978 Vol, an exploratory fleet set out to cross the Northern Gap, led by the newly built colony flagship Grand Adventure and captained by Luraun Anjendan. This was the first venture into that part of the ocean since the quest to evacuate the western atolls towards the end of the Oceanic Era.  Those early voyages found only small islands, and ended when the Cluster Islands were discovered.  By exploring deeper into the gap, the Anjendan tideriders hoped to find larger islands with significant resources, and secure first rights to their trade.
Although the exploratory voyage was a success, the fleet never returned from its second trip. For 75 years Luraun's logbook of the first journey stood as the only written record of weather and current conditions in the Northern Gap.

Purpose

Data from the logbook was expected to lay the foundation for an established route across the Northern Gap.  In addition, certain notes in the book suggest Luraun hoped the log would improve her chances of being selected to succeed Connu as Mother Captain.

Historical Details

History

When the exploratory fleet returned, Luraun presented the logbook to Connu.  After studying the log, Connu planned a speculative voyage for the following spring.  That fleet disappeared without a trace, and the family never recovered from the financial loss, breaking up only a few years later.  Their remaining assets went to Mraydor, and the logbook was kept in the public records.

Legacy

In 2045 Vol, Alcendis Varenonde consulted the log with the objective of finding out what happened to the missing fleet. She recreated the voyage, traveling at the same time of year, and reached Ralcondray, the island the Grand Adventure fleet had discovered. The fleet had in fact made it there, but the crew had been devastated by a disease before arriving and were unable to radio for help. Their descendants still lived on Ralcondray, and their records held Luraun's second logbook.
