Pillars of Silence

Silence.   A black landscape extends as far as the eye can see, mold and lichen spread out across the rocky, broken ground and sickly pale yellow pillars of light stream from ruptures in the broken black stone. Within the columns of light hang the scattered bones and possessions of innumerable creatures, eternally preserved and suspended in the light.   And the only sound is one's own breathing and heartbeat in the dead air.   This is the locus most commonly known as the pillars of silence. A locus whose governing spirit was corrupted into a powerful daemon locus by agents of the Undying Lands through sloth and gluttony. It has now become a greedy, voracious land, unwilling to host life.   The Templar order was able to stymie the spread of the corruption, but have been unable to purify the lands. Instead, only able to trap the daemon locus beneath the ground. The infamous pillars of light being breaks in the seal, ruptures where the daemon locus has extended back into the physical realm. The fascinating and seemingly endless pillars have their own gravitational pull, drawing things into them with varying degrees of strength, but contact with a pillar has often proven to be a death sentence, drawing in anything with intense force. And once within these pillars, all of the living energies are ripped from the victim, dollops and motes consumed in the daemons voracious hunger. Beings quickly die of dehydration, suspended in the pillars without any access to their supernatural abilities, with all technology failing, and unable to fight the intense pull of the pillars in the open air without any grip.   Sound draws the attention of the still living daemon locus, and the more sound is made, the more intensely the pillars pull. Little lives here, and what does is as silent as the grave.   Were things so kind, the pillars of silence would only be visited by foolish treasure seekers, seeking to claim old relics and creature's bones trapped int he pillars. But the locus not only sits atop an ancient sets of ruins from at earliest the previous kalpa, a tempting target for adventurers, and the perpetually dim and clear skies mean that those seeking ways into the upper layers or off-planetos can often find sufficient moonlight to do so, ensuring a steady stream of new victims of this silent land.   Most terrifyingly are the daemon locus' attempts to break free. Random and violent quakes shake the land, breaking the ground as it fractures and shifts, and the pull of the pillars fluctuates intensely for a time. This has claimed many a victim and is the source of many of the bones in the fields.

Geography

The landscape of this locus is very flat, broken up by the frequent pillars. The pillars themselves vary in size from only a meter wide to some that are nearly 24 meters. There are very few changes in elevation throughout the entire locus, and very little in the way of water remains. It is theorized that there are enormous amounts of valuable materials and energy-rich components in the ground on top of the other resources, however, the risk of opening another pillar prevents any such investigations or mining.

Fauna & Flora

Very little lives in the locus. Lichens spread across much of the ground, as well as small creatures that feed on this lichen. The boneswimmers are the only native predators that remain for any length of time, who use their long, dead tails to remove victims of the pillars to feed upon them. These bodies tend to remain outside of the pillars for a time, tempting targets for adventurers willing to risk proximity to gather them before the pull of the lights drag them back into pillars.

Natural Resources

The extensive artifacts and remains of foolish or unlucky adventurers, merchants, or travelers are one of the few consistent 'resources' these lands offer to those able and willing to risk gathering them. Many pieces of Templar equipment can be found crashed into the ground or scattered within and around the pillars from their war to seal away the daemon locus.   Additionally, the prior-kalpa civilization still possesses scraps of knowledge or clues to the higher mysteries of spellcraft and qigong still unheard of in the modern age.
