Vallthriel

Created by Sehno

Vallthriel of the Raven Court (a.k.a. Vall)

A Shadar-kai elf tasked by The Raven Queen herself to explore the world and experience anything new that will make her feel strong emotions. One of the few remaining Shadar-kai who still feel emotion.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Deathly pale skin and thin, raven black hair combined with her extremely lithe figure make her stand out even among the more sickly elves. Her skin is riddled with scars. Regardless of all this, she looks ageless due to the magical appearance she puts up.

Body Features

Deathly pale skin
Raven black, thin hair up to her shoulders
Extremely lithe or even skinny figure
Scars covering her entire body

Facial Features

Thin, bony facial structure. High cheekbones and slightly sunken cheeks. Intense looking bright blue eyes, thin eyebrows and a small mouth with somewhat small lips. A slightly pointed chin and long, pointy ears. Straight, white teeth without a single tooth missing.

Physical quirks

Her left hand is her dominant hand. She walks with a sure step and tends to stare when intrigued.

Special abilities

Her special abilities consist mostly of her refined use of her ancestral magic through intense study. Her other special ability is much more Shadar-kai focused. She has retained most of her emotions and feelings, unlike almost all other Shadar-kai.

Apparel & Accessories

She prefers simple clothing and a robe with many pockets over it all. The colour of her robe is dark-grey and she is wearing a brown worn linen shirt under it. She wears plain underwear and a brown pair of pants. Inside the pockets of her robe she keeps many ingredients needed for her spells, a dagger and other useful items. She wears a belt with pouches attached to it. The pouches hold less useful reagents, or items she might want to throw, like rocks. She wears a heavy backpack filled with useful items found throughout her adventuring times and less useful items that she felt pulled towards.

Specialized Equipment

If she would have name one item that defines her, it is her spellbook. Her spellbook is a tome given to her by her father at the age of fifteen. At that point she was obsessed with the beautiful flowers that grew everywhere and the prettiest one were given a place on the front and backside of her tome. Many years later, when she started her magical studies, she decided to use it as her spellbook. The flowers may look ugly to others after all these years, but it still holds a special place in her heart.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Born only five years after the Curse, Vallthriel is a very old elf. That age does not, however, translate well into experience. She has been raised in the never-changing town of Tree's Shade. Inside this town she was part of the usual rituals, but as a young elf she noticed a slow decline in activities that were normal before. The songs, the art and the dances became less enthusiastic and more part of the routine. Things started to fall into a repeat and the elves Vall had surrounded herself with were becoming less expressive themselves. Eventually something as integral to elves as emotions were starting to dull.
Seeing how things started to change for the worse, Vall decided to start studying the old scrolls that the town kept. She desperately wanted to hold on to the beauty that she had seen before everything dulled and secretly hoped that there might be something that could help her help others. She did not understand why she still felt things as much as she did.
Day in, day out the same rituals repeated. Offerings were brought for their Queen, who Vall had not seen in all of her hundred years of living, and festivities were held. Plants were growing and there was no shortage of food or luxury, but the atmosphere had become melancholic. Vall almost felt the desperation of other elves, looking for that thing that would give them drive and excitement, something to look forward to live another day. These dreary, same feeling days kept going for years upon years. Vall started to become very knowledgable on every piece of information the town had to offer. Almost all of it was related to the history of their people, the Shadar-kai.
Then, a hundred and fifty years into her personal research and studying, The Raven Queen reached out to her. It startled her at first, as She doesn't talk in a way Vall was used to. Instead She invaded her dreams and showed her realms beyond Hers. These dreams, these one-sided visits went on for many months and The Raven Queen showed Vall the faith of Her people. She also showed her something that would change Vall's life. She wanted to make a pact. Vall still had her emotions and her feelings intact. This was a rare trait among the Shadar-kai. It meant that when Vall would experience exciting new things, she would still feel her heart race, or when she would see a dear friend die, she would still cry and feel deep sorrow. The Raven Queen showed Vall that this is what She needed. She wanted to connect Vall's soul and Herself, giving Her the ability to feel what Vall feels. In trade for that, Vall would be able to leave Her realm at will and She would even help her gain knowledge over magic through the use of scrolls and spelltomes that She had consumed. It was an offer Vall could not refuse. In more ways than one.
After the Pact had been made, Vall gained access to many tomes, scrolls and books on ancient magical traditions. The books appeared out of thin air into her study. She got excused from her work as a scholar and gained a personal attendant to take care of all things not related to her studies. It was a tough time, but at least Vall was very curious about all this knowledge that had long been unread. The texts thought her about old ways of channeling magic and theories the Shadar-kai had developed before the Curse, about the school of Theology. With their Queen as the matron.
After many a decade Vall was ready to tackle the task laid upon her. All her knowledge with her, she felt sure she would be able to take on the wild worlds that she imagined were beyond the Queen's realm. At the Day of Leaving one of the Raven Queen's attendants opened a portal to a new realm filled with new things to experience. Vall looked back once more, but all she saw was the same townspeople doing what they always did at that day. She then stepped through the portal and into a new world.
It took Vall only a couple of days to realise that this task is not as easy as she thought it would be. All these other races were extremely unpredictable and very ill-mannered. When she walked into a tavern a human man started talking to her and got mad when she ignored him. And to top it off the innkeep didn't want to server "her kind". It was good then that her luck turned around shortly after these encounters. A well-mannered young looking elf introduced himself to her and asked if she was looking for a place to sleep. She was, so she told him so and the kind man said he knew a place if she had a few gold coins. Now Vall was very learned about the elven culture and their history, but she had no sense of monetary value. She showed the good man a pouch of gold that she had prepared for the travel and the man bowed and gestured towards a small alleyway. After going through a couple alleys further into the city, the man halted her and opened up an old door. She entered and walked up the old stairs. She walked through the following hallway and opened the door in front of her. To her surprise she saw two other people. A skinny but muscular female human and a broad-shouldered hairy dwarf. After that she remembered nothing.
When next Vall opened her eyes she was in her familiar study. Everything had been like it was right before she left for her journey. Everything except for herself. She had scars all over her body. But she did not have the energy to think about it for long, as she felt an extreme tiredness come over her and fell into a deep trance. In the trance the Raven Queen appeared. A silhouette made of an infinite number of ravens flying in place was standing in front of her. And connecting Vall and the silhouette were glowing chains. The Raven Queen spoke to her in her usual way, not by speaking, but by showing her what She wanted her to know. Vall had died. The Raven Queen had brought her back. Vall had much to learn before she was ready. She would not disappoint again. She was very important. And real precious to Her.

Sexuality

Born in a time where everyone around her has stopped feeling love like she still does, she has never had the option to express her sexuality. After all this time it is sadly something she has forgotten about. Perhaps one day someone will come by to make her feel this again, but as of yet she has no sexual orientation or desires.

Education

Studied the history and rituals of the Shadar-kai for many decades in her personal study in town. Later on she studied for many more decades about the magic the Shadar-kai had developed and the theories surrounding it.

Employment

During her time studying, she was employed as a scholar to the Shadar-kai, tasked with recording new foundings and archiving all older information.

Accomplishments & Achievements

During her many years of studying and working as a scholar, Vall has achieved a knowledge of the history of the Shadar-kai like few others have.

Failures & Embarrassments

Her biggest failure and embarrassment is her own death. She felt deeply ashamed by how easy she was deceived by such lowlifes. With it comes her biggest regret: she has no memory of the faces of her killers and is incapable of enacting revenge.

Mental Trauma

Her own death has brought great distrust with her. She is slow to trust people, especially when she is travelling alone. This shows itself in disinterest in others and a very direct way of communicating.

Intellectual Characteristics

She is well-read in the history of her own kind. She also has a good grasp in the working of magic according to old elven studies and theories. She knows the exotic language Celestial.

Morality & Philosophy

She feels a deep sorrow for the dead that have been forced to return and serve unwillingly. The souls of the dead are for the Raven Queen to judge and not to be used for personal gain.
It is important to be free enough to experience all that life has to offer.
People have their own baggage and it is expected that not all will be shared with others.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

The curiosity in the world beyond the realm of her Queen has driven her to adventuring. Or so she tells. In truth the Queen has tasked her with experiencing anything that gives her a strong emotional reaction. Vall is not unhappy with this task, as she has always been curious in the world beyond the little town she has gotten to know all too well.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Very smart when it comes to elven knowledge, but has little perception of other races' history.
Great at reading the environment and seeing things others don't, but not as good at reading people and their intentions.
She is bad at persuading and deceiving people. Lying is new to her.

Likes & Dislikes

Loves new experiences. Even when they are bad, something new brings an unnatural joy.
Hates it when people are indecisive. There is no use in overthinking options when the right thing has already been said by her.
Loves exploring and hates to think about settling for longer than a couple of decades.

Virtues & Personality perks

Intelligent and perceptive.
Positive outlook on life.
Honest.

Vices & Personality flaws

Pays little attention to people and forgets names and faces very fast.
May jump into danger too easily.
Forgets to relay details she noticed that others might not have, thinking others would notice it as well.

Personality Quirks

Tends to walk back and forth impatiently when conversations go nowhere.
Absent-minded when others are talking to each other.

Hygiene

She is surprisingly clean as far as this is possible in the adventuring life. She tries to keep herself fresh and does the same to her clothes. Lacking a spare of clothing and having to cover herself with the bed sheets, she tends to do this at nights when they stay at a tavern and when her adventuring party is sleeping.

Social

Family Ties

Father, Adyarus. Missing since after Vall left for her first adventure.
Mother, Liarieth. She could not handle what the Curse does to someone's mind for long. Over the years she had lost her sanity and eventually the Raven Queen took her.
Only child.

Religious Views

The Raven Queen is the Goddess of the Shadar-kai. Vall has been raised this way and has continued to serve the Raven Queen with respect. After direct orders she has not started to see the Raven Queen as someone mortal, but instead it hardened her views on what she was doing was for the good of all Shadar-kai. Strenghtening their Queen would help them all survive, and perhaps one day save them from this Curse.

Social Aptitude

She is a social wreck. It has lessened a bit after her death, but she is still very bad at reading people's intentions and she has a hard time understanding or telling lies. Luckily this is tempered by her knowledge of certain things and she trusts her own knowledge above anything else. So if someone is lying about something she knows, she would not trust that person. When talking to others, Vall is very direct and expects others to be direct as well. She is not above repeating herself multiple times if needed, but does give up on people that don't give her answers or help the conversation go along. Many races have tendencies and sayings that she does not understand and tends to ignore or take the wrong way. She is not often angered or otherwise emotionally affected by talking to people and flirting is something she doesn't get.
Her etiquette goes back to ancient times and are mostly outdated when it comes to places outside of the Raven Queen's realm. Although she might find something rude, she does not care enough to say something about it.

Mannerisms

She has a very direct style of approaching things. When it comes to interacting with people, she likes to cut to the chase almost instantly. She tends to leave little room for the other person in conversations, since she sees these conversations as purely functional. Song, poems and other art forms are there to express and converse with.

Hobbies & Pets

One of the first spells she learned was to summon a familiar. As expected, this familiar took the form of a raven. She almost always summons this raven and is surprisingly caring towards it. It seems like she has grown affectionate towards this familiar.

Speech

Middle to low pitched voice. She talks clear and simple towards non elves or when speaking Common. She thanks people when they give her answers, whether they are useful or not. She introduces herself with her nickname.

Wealth & Financial state

She has not collected much gold, but back in Tree's Shade she owns a house and a huge library full of old scrolls and tomes.

Good understanding of Common, but some words might be too new for her to understand. Especially when it comes to more technological terms that simply weren't around when her scrolls were written.
Proficient in Celestial, as far as one can be proficient. It is a very different language to learn and she isn't certain if she completely understands it yet.
