Culture, People, and Languages of Albion
The region of Albion is, as noted above, somewhat similar to the Moonsea Islands. The
common people, the Brittani, are very much like the Ffolk. They are a Celtic speaking people
who have lived on Albion for hundreds of years, but they immigrated to the islands in ancient
times from Iberia. Their invasion brought them into conflict with the monstrous Fumorians (the
indigenous goblinoid people) and the Picts/Caledonii (a indigenous human people). The most
recent arrivals have been the Imperials who have been on the island for only the last few
hundred years. Needless to say that there are tensions between all four of these groups with
humans fighting against the Fumor, Caledonii fighting against the Brittani, and almost everyone
fighting, when they can, against the Imperials.
However things have improved between the Brittani and the Imperials in the last couple of
centuries as the Brittani have become more Imperialized. Imperials, for the most part, view
themselves as being superior to the Brittani who they view as being semi-barbaric pagans. Both
groups view the Caledonii as being true barbaric pagans, and the Fumor as being subhuman
monsters. The Fumor view ALL of the human cultures as being invaders and seek their
destruction and the restoration of their ancient lands. For now though they will happily settle for
raiding and plundering.
There is a fifth group: the mysterious Sidhe, or fairy folk. Legends say that they were the true
indigenous people who lived on Albion for ages before the rise of the other but they declined
and disappeared before the arrival of the Caledonii. Some myths say that the Fumor are fallen
Sidhe which is something that the Fumor vigorously deny. The Sidhe are rarely seen, and
seeing one could either be a blessing or a curse.
Languages currently in use on Albion are Imperial (the common tongue of the islands), Britanii
(the other common tongue- it is a distant relative to the Caledonii/Picti tongue), Caledonii/Picti
(these tongues are similar to each other and are semi-related to each other much like French
and Italian), and Fumor (a goblinoid language totally unrelated to any human languages, but
somewhat similar, it’s said, to Sidhe). There are no alignment languages, but Thieves Cant
does exist. Other languages exist such as Gaulish, Greek, Egyptain, Berber, Germanic (there
are several dialects), Jewish, and potentially others. These languages are rather rare and only
spoken in the more cosmopolitan regions of Albion. The language of the Sidhe is virtually
unknown and only used among the Sidhe themselves.
The following races are playable in this campaign: human (obviously- Caledonii, Britanii, and
GImperial), halfings (the halflings hail from Imperial lands and are viewed as another sort of
Imperial by the people of Albion), and elves and half-elves (these are Sidhe- they are very
uncommon and viewed with curiosity and sometimes fear by the Albion people). Half-orcs are
playable too (they are one of the many “bastards” left behind by Fumor raiders).
