Sherman's Oak

Sherman's Oak

is a bleak and foreboding coastal town. The once-prosperous port town is now full of rundown buildings, its docks either mostly abandoned, or cluttered with the remains of ships that have long since run aground. The town is known for its rough, lawless atmosphere, where danger lurks around every corner, its darker streets populated by ruthless pirates, press-gangs, and necromancers. The town is a hub of illicit trade and commerce, attracting merchants, smugglers, and other shady characters from across the land. Despite this, a hardy few honorable souls still call Sherman's Oak home, scraping by through service work, and the last remnants of honest, legitimate trade, surviving in the face of adversity and making the most of the opportunities offered by the remnants of their rough and tumble town.   Sherman's Oak is named after an enormous, twisted, gnarled Elven Oak tree that dominates the landscape of the town. The town's Court, Hall, and prison, as well as a few other dwellings and storehouses, are either carved or built into (or in some cases, grown by magic) out of the giant tree itself. This structure is at the heart of the large town, and serves as both a symbol of the hardships endured by the people of the Oak, and as a reminder of a once glorious past.

Government

Representative Town Meeting   Voters select a large number of Speakers to represent them (the Oak Table) at town meetings, where only they can vote. Each town meeting must be announced with a warrant that provides the date, time and location of the meeting and specifies the items to be discussed The mayor (the Oak Chair) is chosen from among the Speakers on a rotating basis. He serves as the tie breaker, with weak powers over the Table.   The Selectmen are responsible for implementing policy.
