Sailor's Bane
Sailor's Bane only popped up about 4 or 5 months ago. The doctors in the Upper Sephugos have been absolutely baffled in their treatment of this disease. Clerics have had more success than the traditional medicine practitioners. But their abilities are extremely limited and treating the disease constantly left many of the city's healers exhausted physically and magically. They are being stretched thin while the king's men are funneling research towards finding a cure to this disease.
Sailor's Bane is characterized by 3 things. The first symptom is a change in the shape of the pupil and pigment of the iris. Eyes take on a slit pupil, and a dark, ruddy red color to the iris surrounding the pupil. Following the change in the eyes, an extreme thirst overpowers most senses. Patients who have contracted the disease find themselves drinking excessive amounts of water throughout the day. Particularly bad cases site Hyponatremia (overhydration), and imbalance in the levels of sodium in the body, though this hyponatremia behaves differently in different species of creatures who contracted Sailor's Bane. Finally, the final major symptom that people are experiencing is a change in skin tone and quality, resulting in a mucus-like secretion from the skin. These symptoms appear quite quickly, and about a week after initial contraction of the disease, the symptoms worsen physical endurance, eventually leading to a coma-like state. Yet it is beyond just a simple coma state, people fall into a full state of suspended animation. No aging, no withering without sustenance, no progression or decomposition. No one who has contracted the disease so far has awoken from it.
There are other circumstances surrounding the disease that raise even more eyebrows, puzzling even the best of Promera's researchers. The first aspect is the recent and sudden outbreak of it. Many people are suddenly being found unconscious in their living rooms, individuals passed out in streets and alleyways. The second aspect being the fact that ONLY individuals in the Upper Sephugos have been affected by Sailor's Bane. Very few people in the Lower Sephugos have contracted Sailor's Bane.
Unbeknownst to the majority of people in Areceldo, including the crown, is the fact that the source of the infection is coming from the water spring crystals in the central part of the Upper Sephugos. Part of the water generating crystals' magic was corrupted by the Lumwochaak's presence. The battle that partially destroyed the city spread corruption into particular magical centers, the water plants being one of them.
