"I'm here to stop you from doing... whatever it is you're doing! Because it's probably bad!"Sydney is a paladin of Kansen from Dias Fortuna. Quick to anger, impulsive, and energetically zealous, she is ready to fight at a moment's notice. Her abrasive attitude doesn't earn her many friends, but the ones she makes, she is fiercely loyal to.
- Ballista Training: Sydney was well-trained as a Ballista class of paladin, which emphasizes parkour running, climbing and landing skills to keep up with flying enemies or allies. She is very swift and can adapt her skills to any terrain.
- Perfect Hair: Sydney's hair has been blessed by her god Madir. No matter how much physical activity Sydney engages in, her hair will never be messy.
Relationship ApproachSydney has an abrasive and stand-offish personality, and doesn't make fast friends. Though she's been in a relatively successful long-term relationship with Brendolyn, her few attempts at dating outside that were quickly sabotaged by her inflexible attitudes. She has no gender restrictions on her romantic/sexual attraction, but a well-defined set of muscles will almost always capture her attention.
Apparel & Accessories
Sydney's uniforms and costumes almost always feature red/pink or purple as dominant colors. For wrist coverings, Sydney prefers metal cuffs that cover her forearms. She prefers loose, sleeveless clothing that allows for easy running and jumping, but is also rather used to shoulder/chest armor and boots.
Born from a spear that 14-year-old Brendolyn inadvertantly dropped in a magical mountain hot spring on Dias Fortuna, Sydney lived with Brendolyn near the spring for several years. Once reaching adulthood, Sydney enrolled in the Order of Kansen and became a Ballista Paladin, traveling to fight Demshul forces on brief missions around the Myriad Worlds. Sydney's faithful service as a guard was interrupted after Astyr emerged on Dias Fortuna and she was bound to follow him against her will.
Sydney emerged from the spring developed to the age of a teenager, but with very little but the most basic survival instincts and language skills. The Order of Kansen brought Sydney in to develop her core knowledge and her place in Kanite society. She has very little interest in academic pursuits, but very diligently learned the teachings of Kansen and physical training for her duties.
Sydney follows the teachings of the Order of Kansen, which focus on the divine recognition of Madir as the all-powerful creator of the Myriad worlds and all who serve him as the custodians of peace and order. Particular tenets that resonate with Sydney are:
- Loyalty (though not necessarily obedience)
- The moral obligation to maintain physical and mental aptitude in order protect all worlds and creatures on them
- The view of essence manipulation as a necessarily destructive force that destabilizes worlds and morally corrupts the individuals who use it
Being taught that a race is your ultimate enemy doesn't make for the cornerstone for a great relationship. Having them be a big insufferable pain in the neck doesn't help either.Asytr and Sydney met when Astyr stumbled upon the gate Sydney was guarding at Dias Fortuna. Sydney's immediate regard for Astyr as a dangerous, morally corrupt enemy was not improved by Astyr's flippant behavior or teasing nature, and Astyr's refusal to release or recognize the pain he caused by binding them only fueled Sydney's resolve. It was only when Astyr admitted did not deliberately bind their essence and they were able to talk honestly about finding a way to release the binding that Sydney developed a begrudging acceptance of Astyr.
Though still peppered with teasing and rough-housing, their unlikely friendship grew as they both continue to find common ground in their mutual desire to protect Rana and their lack of respect for the Queen's Consulate. When their fight with Wilton resulted in a near-fatal injury for Astyr, Sydney saves his life and resolves that against her teachings, being a Demshul doesn't mean he deserves to die. This is quickly challenged when another secret about his semi-Kanite origins that he'd been keeping is suddenly revealed, though through some (somewhat unintentional) memory sharing, Sydney comes to an understanding of why he wasn't ready to disclose that part of his origin.
Though not without stumbling blocks, both are coming to recognize the defense mechanisms that prevent Astyr from being honest with Sydney, and that prevent Sydney from trusting Astyr's motives and intentions.
Physical InterationsSydney's paladin training taught her to immobilize Demshul, and a lot of the grappling we see when Sydney gets upset with Astyr is based on that training. Restraining wings for flying and the arms for casting is common. Sharp smacks to the head can also disrupt concentration when casting.
Astyr is used to being physically overwhelmed in his roughhousing with Tenge, so he doesn't really take it seriously and has fun with it.
Social InterationsAstyr will often tease and make light of Sydney's problems. If you can laugh at your problems, they're not problems anymore, right? He's helping, right?
Sydney doesn't often see it as "help" and will get frustrated at Astyr for not confronting tough issues head-on or giving direct answers.
Deep down, Astyr knows teasing and joking won't go over well. He's much more used to taking a lashing than dealing with tough things like expectations or melancholy, though. Sydney's always been easy to anger, and he'd rather deal with her familiar ire than something awkward like appreciation.
Sydney does believe in honesty and giving credit and encouragement where it's due. But she's often suspicious of Astyr's methods, and she finds Astyr absolutely insufferable when he's full of himself, so compliments are rare.
Nicknames & Petnames
"Idiot" is mutually used between both of them as a term of both frustration and affection.
Despite their different temperments and views, Sydney and Rana care a lot about one another. Miscommunication of thoughts and intentions happen often in their relationship, but at the core, they both mean well and want the best for one another.Sydney met Rana when she followed Astyr into the secret library in Dias Fortuna. Rana immediately won Sydney over with the promise of snacks. Astyr's offer to bind Rana kicked in Sydney's protective instincts, and Sydney has regarded Rana as an innocent by-stander that must be protected from evil influences ever since. Sydney feels a fierce competitive streak over Rana with Astyr.
Through their travels together, Rana realized that Sydney's essence was deteriorating, and made a practice of secretly putting essence binding solution in her tea to help strenghten the binding between Sydney and Astyr. Sydney eventually found out and became very angry, taking her frustration out on Tenge and Astyr for "poisoning Rana's mind". When Rana was later caught scanning Sydney's essence with QOIN, Rana confessed her fear that Sydney was dying, easing the tensions between them.
When Rana and Sydney meet again on Dias Onda, Sydney fails to see Rana's concerns about feeling unsafe on the Kanite worlds, and sets out to prove that Rana should trust her. The next morning, however, Rana is gone and Sydney believes Rana views her as a failure as a protector.
Physical InterationsOne of Rana's default expressions is holding/touching, and she will often take Sydney's hands when talking to her. Sydney sees this as a sign that Rana is looking to her as her protector, and will hold Rana's hands, shoulders, or embrace her when she wants to reassure her. In a dangerous situation, Sydney will lift Rana in a "princess carry" and run with her to safety.
Social InterationsSydney takes a lot of pride in her role as Rana's savior. She is confident in her ability to protect Rana (physically and spiritually) and constantly assures the people in her care that she'll always be there and they are safe from danger. Rana doesn't always agree what constitutes "danger", but always feels a little more assured by Sydney's strength and determination.
Sydney speaks directly about things that make her upset, though when she loses her temper, Rana gets very uncomfortable. Rana tries to talk about her problems to Sydney occasionally, but is much more likely to hold it in, or try to fix problems before anyone notices.
Sydney came from a world with very little technology, and Rana loves to teach Sydney about the wonderful world of widgets. Sydney plays along to the best of her understanding, but is often left confused by her interactions with technology.
Sydney is sometimes driven so far into "protector" mode that she assumes she already knows what Rana wants. Rana, for her part, is conflict-averse so that she's not crystal clear about it either.
Rana fears that Sydney is too self-sacrificing sometimes, and doesn't look out for her own wants and needs.
Sydney appreciates Cioara's help, but is uneasy about how effortlessly she changes her sense of self, while Cioara can't understand putting yourself through suffering when you can just cut and run. Maybe they both have something to learn from each other? While it wasn't a true meeting, Sydney came to know Cioara from viewing Astyr's childhood flashbacks. Later when Sydney took control of Astyr's body, they met properly and escaped Liesel's hangar together. Cioara helped Sydney acclimate to hiding on Dias Onda and later worked with Rana to create an artifact to make Sydney appear like herself while in Astyr's body. Cioara and Sydney spent the next day together searching Dias Onda for Brendolyn Jaleen, after which both became frustrated at each other: Cioara for Sydney's rigid adherance to the rules and Sydney for Cioara's lack of understanding of her core values. Sydney and Cioara return to Cioara's apartment, and the next morning Sydney has been restored to her body. When they discover Rana is missing and a summons has been delivered to Cioara's apartment for Sydney, Cioara chases after the delivery person. Later, Cioara stumbles upon Sydney and Madir in a conflict, and disguises herself to save Sydney and Astyr. Cioara later follows and frees them both from a holding cell in Dias Korgan, after which they part ways.
