Astyr

Astyr Kaedermos

"Why should I become more responsible when I can be resourceful?"
Flippant, energetic, and always out to have a good time, Astyr travels the Myriad Worlds as an essence scavenger and explorer. Though he's friendly and open with everyone he meets, his distractable nature and poor attention span get him into a lot of trouble. He loathes responsibility and loves shiny objects.

Abilities:

  • Essence Manipulation: Astyr's skills at Essence manipulation are powerful but chaotic, and he tends to get rubrics wrong and store essence sloppily, so it never quite comes out how he puts it in. He is most skilled at simple manipulation and storm-related manifestations, like lightning, wind, and rain.
  • Cooking: Astyr's creative nature manifests in weird but delicious cooking abilities.

Relationship Approach

Astyr is extremely friendly, fun-loving and mischivous, and gets along with anyone willing to join him in his travels and capers. Physical attraction on a romantic or sexual level is absolutely foreign to him, but his relationships often have a large degree of physical contact and exchanging of gifts.

Physical Description

Body Features

Astyr is half Demshul and half Kanite. His right Demshul wing has dark blue dactyls and light blue patagium. His left Kanite wing is the standard white and feathered. When disguised, Astyr prefers to have matching blue Demshul wings.

Apparel & Accessories

Astyr will almost always incorporate aqua blue in his wardrobe (often present as a blue scarf or sash). Wrist coverings are often simple wrist cuffs or fingerless gloves.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Astyr was born in the Conclave with his two siblings Cioara and Tenge. The parents assigned to him were Pleinar and Saode. Ever since escaping the Conclave, he has been living a nomadic life and travelling across the Myriad Worlds exploring.

Education

Astyr was educated by Pleinar and Saode. Easily bored, he never cared to learn much about society or academic subjects, instead jumping headlong into practical applications for his essence manipulation powers.

Employment

Astyr has never had a job in his life and isn't going to start now. Thankfully, the essence he scavenges is put to good use by Tenge in his rubric freelancing business.

History

Being taught that a race is your ultimate enemy doesn't make for the cornerstone for a great relationship. Having them be a big insufferable pain in the neck doesn't help either.
Asytr and Sydney met when Astyr stumbled upon the gate Sydney was guarding at Dias Fortuna. Sydney's immediate regard for Astyr as a dangerous, morally corrupt enemy was not improved by Astyr's flippant behavior or teasing nature, and Astyr's refusal to release or recognize the pain he caused by binding them only fueled Sydney's resolve. It was only when Astyr admitted did not deliberately bind their essence and they were able to talk honestly about finding a way to release the binding that Sydney developed a begrudging acceptance of Astyr.

Though still peppered with teasing and rough-housing, their unlikely friendship grew as they both continue to find common ground in their mutual desire to protect Rana and their lack of respect for the Queen's Consulate. When their fight with Wilton resulted in a near-fatal injury for Astyr, Sydney saves his life and resolves that against her teachings, being a Demshul doesn't mean he deserves to die. This is quickly challenged when another secret about his semi-Kanite origins that he'd been keeping is suddenly revealed, though through some (somewhat unintentional) memory sharing, Sydney comes to an understanding of why he wasn't ready to disclose that part of his origin.

Though not without stumbling blocks, both are coming to recognize the defense mechanisms that prevent Astyr from being honest with Sydney, and that prevent Sydney from trusting Astyr's motives and intentions.

Physical Interations

Sydney's paladin training taught her to immobilize Demshul, and a lot of the grappling we see when Sydney gets upset with Astyr is based on that training. Restraining wings for flying and the arms for casting is common. Sharp smacks to the head can also disrupt concentration when casting.

Astyr is used to being physically overwhelmed in his roughhousing with Tenge, so he doesn't really take it seriously and has fun with it.

Social Interations

Astyr will often tease and make light of Sydney's problems. If you can laugh at your problems, they're not problems anymore, right? He's helping, right?

Sydney doesn't often see it as "help" and will get frustrated at Astyr for not confronting tough issues head-on or giving direct answers.

Deep down, Astyr knows teasing and joking won't go over well. He's much more used to taking a lashing than dealing with tough things like expectations or melancholy, though. Sydney's always been easy to anger, and he'd rather deal with her familiar ire than something awkward like appreciation.

Sydney does believe in honesty and giving credit and encouragement where it's due. But she's often suspicious of Astyr's methods, and she finds Astyr absolutely insufferable when he's full of himself, so compliments are rare.

Nicknames & Petnames

"Idiot" is mutually used between both of them as a term of both frustration and affection.

History

A happy and easy-going relationship, these two care about, impress, and trust each other a lot!
Asytr and Rana met when Astyr stumbled into the secret library where Rana was being held at Dias Fortuna. Rana's friendly personality and interest in Astyr's powers and travels made them fast friends, and when Rana agreed to travel with Astyr, she proved to be a very handy friend to have around.

Rana and Astyr tend to get distracted by different things from world to world, and don't tend to interact much except to show each other what cool and fun things they've been up to in childlike glee. On occasions where Rana has been upset or scared of/for Tenge or Sydney, Astyr has been a source of consolation for Rana.

When Astyr regained control of his body and deduced that Rana was never actually bound to him, his confidence in their relationship also suffered, and now he wonders how much agency he had. Though how and when he'll bring these up is yet to be seen....

Physical Interations

When Rana is upset or senses someone else is, she really likes to hug. Astyr loves her hugs, and is also happy to comfort her when she wants to be held... but he also found out that she's extremely ticklish on the scalp and will scruffle her hair sometimes to get her to laugh again. He hates it when people he cares about are sad.

Rana holds and touches things a lot by default because she has a lot of positive feelings tied to working with mechanical objects. With Astyr, this takes the form of hand-holding. Astyr likes it, though doesn't often initiate physical contact himself.

Social Interations

One of Astyr's default expressions of caring is giving gifts (usually something he's made with magic, but also cooking and stuff he's found elsewhere). He does this a lot with Rana, who responds positively to it. She will often overlook the irresponsible means by which he acquires things. Because of her sheltered background, she is also easily impressed by cool and new objects she can study.

Astyr and Rana are both distractable and conflict-avoidant, so serious conversations and confrontation are almost non-existant between them. When they're getting along, it's great, but this might become a problem if they run into issues they can't ignore...

History

Tenge would never admit it, but his younger brother Astyr knows him better than anyone. Unfortunately, this also includes every possible way to annoy him.
Astyr and Tenge grew up together in the Conclave as a family unit. Though Tenge found Astyr mildly annoying as a little brother, Astyr was always impressed and complimentary of Tenge and persistent in trying to get Tenge to like him and Tenge secretly appreciated being looked up to. Astyr was occassionaly a point of rivalry between Tenge and Cioara.

When the siblings escaped, Tenge quickly discovered that traveling from world to world was very stressful to him, and opted to stay in one place. Astyr visited occasionally before, but once Sydney and Rana became his traveling companions, he stopped by more often to take breathers in between worlds.

Astyr's visit after Tirani was largely uneventful, though Tenge blamed Astyr for letting the portagrue be corrupted and demanded he go into town to see Lydia Korsica to fix it. After Astyr's return from Goddessflight with a Wingbucks full of Morphids, we learn that Astyr regards the Morphids as Tenge's father and has been hoping to reconcile them. Tenge refuses to accept that the Morphids might have feelings or be able to be talked with, and becomes high-key panicked when the Morphid that Astyr brought with him had escaped and sends Astyr to look for him. While Tenge is working to find the Morphid, he also becomes alarmed when Astyr mentions that Rana scanned his essence with QOIN and sent information to the Queen's Consulate, and believes that it's only a matter of time before Astyr's actions attract unwanted attention from the Demshul government. When Astyr leaves the house to look for Sydney (and they do exactly that), Tenge attempts to help Astyr by communicating through the Weave of the world and pinpointing an essence manipulation field that may contain a back door for Astyr to use to leave the world in Lydia's manufactory. Neither brother is aware of what happened to the other after this, and they have not had communication since.

Physical Interations

Like most Demshul, Tenge has a lot of blind spots when turning and looking over his shoulder. So if you want to be really annoying, you hang out on people's shoulders. Astyr wants to be really annoying a lot.

When Tenge has lost his temper with Astyr, he will often physically grab and move Astyr elsewhere (usually with multiple copies) and/or throw him around.

Social Interations

Tenge takes his role of the responsible older sibling of Astyr very seriously, and has an opinion and lecture about all the dangerous things Astyr chooses to do. Astyr doesn't often take them too personally, and feels pity for the boring life that Tenge leads. Astyr knows that Tenge's greatest fears are losing control of his Morphid nature and others discovering it, and it paralyzes him. Astyr cares for his brother a lot, and would do anything to show him there are things to see and do on the outside. Unfortunately, the reasons that Astyr enjoys traveling just cause more fear in Tenge.

Tenge has a very reactive personality, taking action only when put in a position when he needs to. It's usually Astyr's actions that will provide the catalyst for their interactions. Tenge can usually tell when Astyr is trying to rile him up to take action, and will usually restrain himself to lecturing Astyr about being more responsible.

Astyr does not deal with problems responsibly or rationally, preferring to pretend they're not problems at all around other people. Growing up, Tenge is the only person Astyr is fully comfortable confiding in. And after a bit of grumbling, Tenge usually comes through for Astyr if he can.

Astyr loves to talk about everything he's done while world-hopping. It's Astyr's way of trying to inspire Tenge to leave his house once in a while. Tenge is information-absorbant by nature and can't help but be a little curious by Astyr's stories. Just a little.

Tenge has some basic fears about Astyr's antics (especially in relation to protecting Rana), but will begrudingly admit that he's competent. If only he would grow up a little.

History

While Cioara doesn't understand Demshul magic, she tries to stay extremely encouraging with Astyr. Astyr usually responds well, but sometimes finds it pressuring because he looks up to his big sister so much.
Cioara and Astyr were raised together in the Conclave from their youth. Maintaining a very positive relationship growing up, Astyr and Cioara bonded over Astyr's unconventional but creative skills with cooking, though Cioara was certainly never above sisterly teasing. Upon their escape from the Conclave, Cioara found that she preferred big Kanite cities which were inaccessible to her magic-using brothers, at which point Astyr and Cioara drifted apart and Astyr only occassionally visited whichever new place Cioara had wandered.   After the artifact disguising Astyr's wing came out, Astyr used the shake-n-sketch to ask for her help evading the Demshul authorities that were after him and replace the artifact that would hide his Kanite wing again. Cioara disclosed her location on Dias Onda and Astyr and Rana met her at a Wingbucks. Cioara fluctuated between taking Astyr's problems semi-seriously and showing off, but didn't seem to worry much when Astyr lost control of his body to Sydney, confident that he would return again (which he eventually did).   When Astyr and Sydney were going to meet Brenna, Cioara protected Astyr from getting "jumped" by Vuudo, attacked by Kanite guards, and later freed him from his restraints in a holding cell aiding his escape at Dias Korgan. Astyr and Cioara parted ways at this point, both doing their best to escape Dias Korgan.
