Summercamp 2021 Pledge in The Morning Realm | World Anvil

Summercamp 2021 Pledge

Copper or rust!
— some clever anvilite
Summercamp 2020 is a worldbuilding challenge throughout July. 31 Prompts will be released following the schedule below.
  • Thursday 1st July: Copper Prompt reveal (prompts 1-10)
  • Saturday 10th July: Silver Prompt reveal (prompts 11-20)
  • Tuesday 20th July: Gold Prompt reveal (prompts 21-30)
  • Friday 30th July: Diamond Prompt reveal (prompt 31!)
I will be using these prompts to develop the Morning Realm, the world for my current DnD campaign. My goal is not to complete all the prompts, but to have fun doing as many as possible! Alongside the Worldanvil discord community I think it'll be a blast. If things get rough, I trust that they'll be there to commiserate or encourage me, whatever needs doing.

Focus Area

Listed by number of priority, the areas I would like to focus on are as follows.
1. My Must Write List. These are the articles that are desperately needed to give context to the world, but that I've been procrastinating.
2. The Capital of the Castellan Kingdoms. My campaign is set in the Capital, so of all the areas in my world, it's the one with the most value for effort.
3. My own amusement! If an article would bring me joy to write, but doesn't fit what I've put here, then bugger it, I'll write it anyway!

Questions to ask myself when the prompts are revealed

  • What are my immediate ideas?
  • Can I answer this prompt and cross something off of my Must Write List?
  • If not, can I make one of those work in the Castellan Capital?
  • If not, is one of my ideas something fun I'm itching to write?
  • If I don't get any ideas, are other people working on them and doing something neat?

Preparing for Summercamp

The goal of this preparation is to have as few other things to worry about as possible during Summercamp.

Organization

An organized wiki is a happy wiki. In pursuit of a happy wiki, I'm taking World Anvils advice and getting my hens all in a row. World Anvil recommended we prepare the images we know we'll need, that we up our article design to guide readers, and that we organize our categories. I work hard to make sure my articles are formatted clearly, so much so that I had already written a style guide just before we were given this assignment! Still, there's always work to be done.   For the sake of my own sanity, I will put no pressure on myself to complete all my desired images within this week, or even before Summercamp.   Write the Style Guide and Pledge Document

Recategorization

Prior to the Great Recategorization there were four somewhat shoddily named categories (Sociology, Theology, Geography and Templates.) Only some categories had icons and there was no overarching theme. To improve this a list was written with all the current articles and articles I knew I wanted in the future. For additional inspiration I looked at how other World Anvils structured theirs, as well as how the DnD Campaign books. After some consideration, I ended with the following structure.   I also went through and decided which Font Awesome Icons I wanted to use, and added a table with the icon codes and what they represent to my Style Guide.

Article Templates

Templates are a great way to speed up the creation of articles, provided they'd all require the same base. I used this method when creating the pages for my Provinces and my Noble Houses. These templates have since been deleted to save space, as I won't be adding more.
Template: Nation
Generic article | Dec 28, 2021

A template for nation articles.

Images

As an artist it's easy to feel like I should illustrate everything myself. As it turns out, that doesn't go well with chronic fatigue and a tendency towards perfectionism. I had to face myself midway through this weeks prep and admit defeat. A fully illustrated map and multiple landscapes just wasn't going to happen in a week. Instead I allowed myself to find public domain art instead, and focused on making sure it was all fully credited. The images I've found are uploaded in a galley below.
Placeholder Images
I created two placeholder images for character pages, one for male and one for female characters. These are inspired by the silhouette cameos that were popular during the victorian era.

I also used Watabou's medieval city generator to generate a city map, which I illustrated and tidied up in photoshop. I also did the same for a map of the continent, using Azgaar's fantasy map generator.

I like that you have a "Must Write List" and include flexibility in your strategy. Good luck with Summer Camp!

I really like that you have a checklist of what you want to work on during Summer Camp. Hopefully you'll be able to do some of those! :D

Thank you! I'm sure I'll cross a couple of them off. There's bound to be at least one prompt that fits the bill, right?

Best of luck to you! Looks like you've got a good preparation foundation.   Also that "I tried" badge is a mood.

I had a giggle at the "discount" badges :D Placeholder images are SUCH a great idea. I should do that more often instead of disappearing for days in graphics programs lol...Good luck to you and your SummerCamp dreams! <3

You are doing a great job! Keep creating; I believe in you!
