The
Revelry is a grand festival marking the
perigee moon. It is held on the
13th Titan, but celebrations often extend the week. It is a celebration of the primal instincts of mankind, heightened by the moon and it's magics. A potent magical drink called Moon Brew is made for each Revelry and partaken of by the vast majority of the participants in the Revelry. There are three major celebrations held in the Castellan Kingdoms during Revelry: the
Seville Perigee Tournament, the
Capitol masquerades, and the
Wild Dance on the Alurr Isles.
The Revelry is not recognized by the Temple, in spite of its massive popularity. The moralistic factions of the Temple believe that the Revelry leads people to heathenry and glorifies lycanthropy. However, this ancient celebration persists, and many local priests, especially those who are devoted to Hedona, participate in Revelry as well.
Moon Brew
Moon brew is an alcoholic drink brewed specifically for the Revelry. The liquid is a white colour with an opalescent shine, and tastes strongly of alcohol. Those under the active effects of moon brew have glowing eyes, feel little pain, and tend to feel emboldened and enthusiastic about seeking thrills. Perhaps fortunately, Moon Brew is said to shield the soul, so that those who drink Moon Brew under the perigee moon cannot die as long as they are under the effect of the brew. Many Revelry events take advantage of this effect, enabling people to take far greater risks than they typically could.
Moon Brew is prepared by druids, their apprentices, rangers, and local townsfolk a full month ahead of the festival. Although the mash is often bulked with grains contributed by farmers, the key ingredient of Moon Brew are the bulbous roots of the nightbloom flower, harvested on a moonless night. Nature magicks are worked into the mash as it is prepared, and then the brew is allowed to ferment for a moon cycle. Although the taste of the brew is different not only from region to region and from year to year, the basic flavor profile is always recognizable.
Seville Perigee Tournament
The
Seville Perigee Tournament starts on the monday prior to the perigee moon. People travel from far away to compete in the martial tournaments for the grand prices or to enjoy the feasts and festivities. The most popular of all the events is the Brawl, a no-holds-barred mass combat on the thirteenth won by the last man standing.
Jousting
The Joust typically opens the Tournament. Two horsemen charge at each other, wielding oversized lances in an attempt to topple the other off their own horse. Due to the nature of this tournament, it is almost always nobles that participate, and knights that win. It is seen as fashionable to put oneself at a slight disadvantage when jousting, such as bringing a less-than-perfect steed or taking an imperfect pose so that it is even more honorable that the underdog wins. These tactics are a delicate balancing act, sometimes literally, because too much of a disadvantage will see a participant knocked out of the jousting tournament far before the final round.
Archery Contests
Archery is typically the second event. An archery range is prepared with small five-ringed targets at a surprisingly far distance. Each smaller ring is worth more points. Archery is very popular with the common folk. Marksmanship is as important to the typical person of the kingdoms as horseriding is to nobles. Unlike jousting, though, it is feasible for a peasant to afford to participate in the archery tournament, and even the qualifying rounds draw massive crowds.
Many archers also perform trick shots after the archery contest is completed. The seemingly impossible feats of rapidfire shots, acrobatics and splitting arrows delight the masses.
Brawl
The
Brawl is considered the main event of the Seville Tournament. It happens on the day of the perigee moon and takes place in one massive arena, where competitors take down rivals until only one person is left standing. The prizes are often grand and sought-after, and the Brawl itself is exciting to spectate in a way not matched by other sporting events, as long as one can stomach the sight of the often brutal injuries sustained.
All competitors in the Brawl partake of Moon Brew first, as a safety precaution. There are only two rules: do not harm those who are downed, and do not harm those dressed in white. Medics and healers wear white clothes and retrieve those who are downed, taking them to the healing tents and tending to their injuries. It is considered bad manners to use magic that cannot be precisely targeted, especially because they carry a high risk of hurting those in white or already down.
Capitol Masquerades
The
Capitol Masquerades are held on the night of the perigee moon. They are not a single organized event, but rather a collective term for the dozens of parties, as well as the masked revellers who spill out into the streets. Much like every other ocassion, the Masquerades are seen as yet another opportunity to network and mingle, in spite of the fact that everyone is masked. The Masquerades are also an opportunity to display the finest and most exotic foods available, alongside the ever-present Moon Brew, though the drink is not as important as it is in other Revelry events. There are rumors of bacchanalian closed parties with very exclusive guest lists, but the individuals involved are not inclined to reveal who goes to which party.
Wild Dance of Alurr
The
Wild Dance is an Alluran tradition. As the moon rises, bonfires are built with perfumed logs and incense and lit with roaring flame. The thick smoke is mildly hallucinogenic, intensifying the senses and giving those who inhale it a sense of giddiness and vertigo. Folklore says that the Dance originated in a time before time, when Alurr was threatened by a raging sea and the inhabitants joined hands and danced the waters away. Just like the ancient Alurrans, those who Dance feel like the entire world quakes under their feet, and that stopping would allow the waves to rise and crash down upon Alurr; as the fires die down, these feelings also fade.
Due to the intense nature of the Dance, little ones are not allowed to participate. Placing a flower under your pillow on the night of the perigee moon is said toreveal your future spouse in your dreams, perhaps told to children so that they eagerly go to bed.
Great festival! So many cool events happening... I like the brawl. Are the participant armed or do they only use magic? Can the moon brew be used at other time of the year? It seems like something that would be super useful for a war. If not, I'd even see them choose that night to have a battle despite the cultural importance..
Thank you so much! I like the brawl too, but I'd probably hate it if I was in universe ^^ And most participants in the brawl wield weapons, so that's totally fine! The Moon Brew is only active on the night of the perigee moon. But yes, if you could convince people to part with their dearly beloved festival and fight a real battle instead, it really might be the night to do it.
