Bluethimble Fever
First encountered when the Commonwealth colonised Criney Tip and caught it from the indigenous flower the bluethimble, it then spread across much of the galaxy before a cure was synthesised and a concerted effort eradicated both the flower and the disease - or so they thought. The flower and disease have recently recurred in Criney Tip and spread across much of the planet, killing tens of thousands with no sign of stopping.
Transmission & Vectors
Flower to human, through inhalation of airborne infected pollen.
Causes
Cross-pollination of bluethimble flowers infected with the virus.
Symptoms
In flowers, asymptomatic save a more vigorous pollen release. In humans - respiratory trouble, full-body rash/hives, necrosis of extremities, hallucination, cardiac arrest.
Treatment
Symptoms can be treated normally. Exposure to infected pollen must be stopped. The cure is expensive and difficult to manufacture, and is only stockpiled in Alacant Caduceus.
Prognosis
1 day - slow nosebleed
2-7 days - bodily rash/hives, wheezing
8-14 days - necrosis of extremities, delirium, inability to breathe independently
14-28 days - fatal tachycardia
Sequela
survivors will never contract it again. if cure administered before necrosis and respiratory failure, no lasting effects. if after, body parts may be lost, and oxygen may be required for life. if tachycardia has begun, shortened life expectancy from cardiac stress, without heart transplantation.
Hosts & Carriers
bluethimble flowers carry but are unaffected
Prevention
The vaccine is no longer in production due to the presumed eradication.
Epidemiology
Spring airborne pollen, high winds, and presence of bluethimbles.
History
First recorded case was first spring after Criney Tip colonised. First colonists (30) all died, and commonwealth medics who investigated spread the pollen through space. This affected humans all over the galaxy until the rapid and effective eradication effort.
