the Maker of Ways
The third Opener of Ways, under construction since 2398 on Discordia, a moon of Weeper's Pit.
The location was a subject of a great matter of controversy: while most doors had been easy and safe to open, some hadn't been; and nobody wanted their planet ruined by a repeat of The End. Many on Weeper's Pit volunteered, but even that was insufficient, so the project was moved to Discordia, the planet's moon --- even something on the scale of The End could not reach the planet from such a distance. This added costs: not only everything had to be moved to Weeper's Pit, but then launched up to the moon. (This all was of great benefit to the Pit, whose launch industry blossomed.) As of the 1st of January, 2400, the Opener is complete and ready for its full tests; the first door is expected to be opened sometime in March. The Opener is so designed that the minimal crew of ten at the site can close the door at any time; so can the backup crews on Discordia's orbit and on the other side of the moon; and if necessary, so can Outer Control back on Weeper's Pit.
- The Claws. The actual point where the door will be opened, in a pressurized 100 meter-radius concrete dome on the surface of Discordia, on the north slope of Mount Bloom.
- The Hands. The main engines of the Opener, buried 200m deep and 500m to the side of the Claws.
- The Head. The control chamber, on the other side of Mount Bloom from the previous; they are reached through a tunnel through the heart of the mountain.
- The Eyes. A total of 36 observation posts around Mount Bloom, and 16 satellites on orbit around Discordia, and three observatories on Weeper's Pit, all wired to powerful decision-making computers.
- The Backbrain. The base on the other side of Discordia, and so sheltered from every imaginable form of interference from an open door. The door is supposed to be fail-safe: if it loses contact to the Backbrain, the engines are supposed to draw it closed immediately.
- Outer Control. Back on Weeper's Pit, close to the door to Izmat. Tasked with severing the Backbrain-Hands connection if necessary; and in the case of a supreme disaster, with signalling the imminent closure of the Izmat door. Data storages deep under Outer Control are set to record what happens, and to survive anything.
