Izmat

A planet discovered in 2130 thru a Pathway from Earth; inhabited the same year 2130. Nicknamed "The New Earth", Izmat is the most immediately habitable planet humanity has found, surpassing even Earth in its beauty and plenty. (Or that is what the locals sat, anyway.)   In 2199, Izmat activated its own Opener of Ways, only the second after the one on Earth and so far the last, unless the Maker of Ways on a moon of Weeper's Pit is completed. Izmat's opener was used to find and inhabit many new worlds.

Planet

Izmat is the first planet of a blue dwarf star (Sol Izmat). The system has two other planets, another inhabited world Izmat II, and a gas giant (Bellerophon), and sundry planetoids in the outer system.   Izmat's gravity is 0.95 EG, and its surface area is 0.8 ES.   Izmat has one huge and three large continents, and many islands. The continents are:
  • Mercy, "the Endless Plenty", the huge continent, stretching from the South Pole to the tropics in three great grasping "hands".
  • Havadat, "Paradise Gate", the most consistently warm continent.
  • Allsdat, "Winds' Home", a subarctic, sparsely populated continent.
  • Izmoor, "the Gate of Humanity", the smallest continent, and the most desert-like; the location of Izmat's Opener of Ways and the doorways it has created. (Tbe original Earth-Izmar doorway was on Havadat, in the Boiled Valley.)
Izmat has flora and fauna that strangely parallel those of Earth, even if they are unrelated and incompatible on a genetic level. Then again, Izmat looks and feels like Earth: it has blue skies and oceans, white ice caps, yellow and red deserts, black bogs, green and yellow and red forests, and so on. (On Earth, yellow and red forests were apparently seasonal.) The solar activity of Sol Izmat is regular and without excitement, and the system is unusually free of asteroids and other such hazards, largely due to the hunger of Bellerophon, the system's other planet.

Humanity

Izmat is the most populous world. During the years of a direct doorway from Earth (2130--2205), 35M people moved to Izmat, lured by its natural beauty and the freedom and expanse of life it offered; that one could easily walk from old polluted failure-stained Earth to this new Paradise and breathe free also helped. (Izmats are proud of their genre of quarantine poetry, composed as if one was sitting out the two-week quarantine of new inhabitants, waiting if they'd brought something too much from Earth along with themselves.) In the two centuries since, those millions have experienced steady population growth, giving the world its current population of 65M.   Note that there is no doorway between Izmat and Izmat II. Both were discovered from Earth; reaching two planets in the same star system was thought to be very unlikely, and raise great excitement at the time. Establishing a direct connection between Izmat and Izmat II was impossible thru Earth, and remains impossible thru Izmat; the necessary energy is simply unworkable. Travel between the two therefore operates thru actual space, between their orbitals. (After 2205, there was a dark decade when the worlds could only watch each other, and Izmat II, being much smaller, was in danger of collapse. The two stayed in contact through beamed satellite communications.)   People of Izmat are called Izmarines.
