Discordia

Discordia is a moon of Weeper's Pit. It is the location of the new Opener of Ways, called the Maker of Ways; because of that there is regular shuttle traffic between the planet and the moon. The Maker's parts are chief around and under Mount Bloom, though the Backbrain (the emergency cutoff site) is on the other side of Discordia. The spaceport for the Maker's construction is right next to Mount Bloom, and it is larger than was strictly necessary --- partly because the technical and public opinion parts of the project took a long time, but rock is easy to move, and partly because if the Maker works and new worlds are opened, Discordia will become a hotspot of explorers, inhabitants and materiel.   Discordia is a very big and dense rocky moon, with no atmosphere, but with a small southern ice cap, hosting Quick Base, used to mine ice for the purposes of Mount Bloom. ("The Maker of Ways" is unwieldy, and "the Maker" is rather generic on the long run, so those working on the project usually call it "Mount Bloom".)   Various other locations that were considered for the Maker over the decades host relays and observation stations: Location Tremors, Location Crevasse, Location Flatland and Location Boulders. (The names aren't descriptive, but explorer humor.)   There are 16 brand-new satellites related to observing the new doors placed around Discordia, plus 5 generic communication satellites (older), plus 7 other satellites of the project (of varying age).   Discordia's gravity is 0.8 EG. Earth's Moon was 0.16 EG; it was slightly bigger but much less dense. The planetary material of Weeper's Pit and Discordia is denser than that of Earth and its Moon. Discordia has a very heavy and large metallic core, exceeding even Weeper's Pit in density. This is why Discordia was chosen, of course: if planets were too precious to be risked, a planetary moon over an inhabited world was necessary, and other inhabited worlds did not have moons as massive as Weeper's Pit. Moons of lesser gravity would not do, because an Opener works from gravity to (roughly) equal gravity, and opening doors to small moons without atmospheres was not attractive: they could orbit completely unsuitable planets, and would require a door massive enough to move a shuttle through, not to even mention fuel and such considerations.
