The Greensick Ceremony

It had been three years since the Inkusel had passed Nimun's lips. Now her mind could feel the infection spreading through the jungle, how it took root in the water of Hantanius City, how it altered life and non-life itself to suit its whims.   Many would be terrified in the face of such evil. She was anything but.
Jhanté folk tale
Most outsiders would see the Greensick Ceremony as a strange way to be brought into the Gojoth Tree Corps. If they're so invested in ridding the world of the Inkuborn, then why do young initiates go through with a ceremony that purposefully gives them the disease they cause? But what outsiders don't realize is that the rewards are immeasurable in this line of work. Sensing Inkuborn might mean living to run another day.

Drinking Evil

Those wanting the honour of becoming Gojoth Runners need to pass a variety of trials to test their combat skills, their agility and their knowledge of the jungle and the Inkuborn. Those selected are then brought to the nearest Healer to undergo the ceremony.   The ceremony is rather short, surprisingly enough. The Healer usually makes an address to the new runners, extorting them to be brave and compassionate in the face of danger. At the close of these remarks, the Healer then calls each one up by name, and the new runners drink of a special flask prepared for the ceremony (see sidebar). As per others infected with the first stage of the Inkusel, the new initiates are suddenly able to sense Inkuborn within half a kilometre and gain a slight greenish tinge to their skin - hence the name of the ceremony.

The Greensick Flask

Initiates, at the close of the ceremony, ceremoniously infect themselves with the Inkusel by drinking from the contents. Depending on the location, the Flask will contain inert Inkusel (which cannot infect clay, apparently) or infected water.

They infect themselves with the disease they hunt? How interesting!
