Ghez

The Ghez are an inorganic race of golem-like creatures that inhabit the central islands of Ghezzul. Fiercely protective of their territory, little is known about this mysterious civilisation, save that their bodies are made of stone and they do not welcome outsiders.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Ghez are made up of a selection of stone blocks and smaller detritus, surrounding a superheated magical 'core'. The nature of this core is still unknown, but it is extremely dense and made of a volatile material. The power of this material extends to all corners of the Ghez anatomy, allowing it to move and act with immense strength.   Ghez bodies have no standard blueprint; almost every new creature is unique. Some are formed with extra limbs or a tail, others may be unusually big or small.   Regardless, their formation and the nature of their abilities are what designate their caste in society. If one has significant upper-body strength or a bulwark-like abdomen, they would be perfectly suited to a warrior caste, to spend the rest of their life fighting enemies or defending the weak.

Genetics and Reproduction

Being an inorganic species, there is no reproduction to speak of, however for the Ghez life begins in a heated pool of primordial ooze, a volatile cocktail of minerals and chemicals tended for centuries, for the purpose of generating new creatures. Fully-grown Ghez spend time in and around these pools, cultivating the magic within the ooze until infant Ghez are spontaneously brought into being.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once its time has come, a new creature emerges in an early slug-like form. It spends the next few months in the same primordial pool, cooling and growing, until it has a body stable and hard enough to exist outside of the ooze. At this point, the creature will be about 25% of its adult size.   Over the next year or so, it will begin living and working within it's designated caste as it reaches maturity. It's body grows and hardens, and it has the ability to attach additional rocks to itself (which may or may not take) in order to help it in its day-to-day life.   Because of this, Ghez bodies carry the appearance of their location and responsibilities. A Ghez that lives in or near a volcano may have parts of their body made up of pumice or obsidian. It is not uncommon for Ghez to wear different ores as well, some carrying precious metals or gems in their body.

Biological Cycle

The Ghez live for an exceptionally long time, provided they do not die in battle or are executed. After 700-800 years, the magic 'glue' holding their bodies together begins to weaken and rocky segments may fall away. The weakening of this bond also lets much of their mass sag slightly, giving the impression the creature is slumping or hunching.   At a certain point, one may decide to be intentionally destroyed on their own terms or to go into exile to deteriorate in isolation.

History

It is thought that the Ghez originated from long-forgotten magical experiments of the ancient Nel'Akhiron empire, or that they began as mere magical servants/constructs, liberated once the empire collapsed.
