The Bear

"He is your bear, he is loyal. He is safe. Let him bare his teeth. Let him show his mighty claws. Let him roar if you need him to!"- Blair the Wise

The Bear

I need to let you know a few things about The Bear, well my bear. When we are in The Lost Place he is just a whistle away. He can be summoned and will lay waste to any threat to me or die trying. When we are in this world, the one that you and I walk in, he stays hidden away in my inner being. As I have gotten older, he seldom emerges. I have come to understand that he was born when a not so thing nice thing wearing the mask of a man (that my mother dated) took me on a hiking trip as a child. Terrible things that need not be mentioned happened to me that day, resulting in the birth of The Bear. Sometimes, when I am in danger, he steps forward for me and allows me to hide away while he conducts business.

The Job of The Bear

The Bear is my guardian. He is my fierce protector.

Physical Description

The Bear doesn't look like your normal bear. Instead, he looks like I needed him to look when I was a scared child. He is a child's idea of a bear. The Bear had to be more frightening than the monsters that took up residence in my home. I needed The Bear to be all of these things in order for me to feel safe. While working, The Bear is a mountain of coarse fur, sharp teeth, claws; he has a dangerous attitude. He stands eighteen feet tall and casts a long shadow even on the darkest night. The Bear has triangular slits for eyes that glow red. He wreaks of a pack of wet dogs and battles. Scars line his face and body; plump lines with missing fur run here and there. If you compared us, you would see we share these marks.   When The Bear isn't working he is much different; coincidentally this is when I am calm and safe. During safe times the bear is smaller, about the size of a poodle puppy. His fur is so soft that I can use him as a pillow for a nap. The Bear, during calm times, presents more like a cuddly Teddy Bear. His scars melt away. You might convince yourself that he wasn't even there.

Feeding The Bear

The Bear feeds on my fear. The bigger my danger the more fuel he needs to do his duty. He pulls from me (through our mental bond) and allows me to escape the stressor so that he can finish the work that needs to be done. From time to time he likes to be treated, and judging from my own physical size, he is treated often. To treat The Bear I feed him coffee and pastries; The Bear likes sweets and caffeine.

Temperament

The Bear is a real brute of a beast when he deems it necessary. Despite my knowing he is on my side, His roar rattles my bones. When he is working, his only purpose is to eliminate threats. He remains ever loyal as he always has been, and remains always ready to step forward to absorb more scars.

Weaknesses

The Bear, like any creature, has his weaknesses. For one, when I was younger, he would become so angry that he charged into a situation ready to maul even when the need for mauling wasn't there. He can be brought down with physical attacks but it takes much damage to do so. The Bear can die (and has) but he always comes back with a vengeance. I wish I could explain this part but I can't. After a death, he just returns after a period of scarring. The Bear can be weakened with such items as Benadryl, cough syrup with codeine, melatonin, or even Clonidine and he is forced into a state of rest.

The Resting Bear

As I have grown in age and years, The Bear has been able to take more rest. The Bear enjoys dark places with a variety of music playing in between calls to action. He sleeps in the cave of my subconscious.
