5. The Battle with Gilean Vel

The Penumbra Shores

In my game, the party had allies show up to aid them from a previous campaign. This fight is extremely difficult and needs tuned to your party. In my game they had 4x Level 8 PC's as backup, and 6x Level 11 PC's as the main party.

Finally the time has come, one by one you pass through the portals ingress. The world is bleak, no light eminates from the sky, devoid of color, even your own clothing seems desaturated by the oppressive force of the shadowfell. Before you stands a man of ash-gray skin, seemingly awaiting your arrival. He begins, "You dare enter my domain, to stand in the realm of shadow? To challenge my work?"

Gilean Talking Points

• "It matters not, the process is irreversible. Even if you strike me down, my work is complete. The drill will complete its mission with no additional fuel, and my pact with Orcus will be complete."
• He doesn't believe the party can cure Katya. He doesn't know Ember.
• He believes this pact with Orcus is the only thing that can save Katya, and doesn't believe Siebkron betrayed him.
• "You have no hope, on a whim I can teleport miles away in the Shadowfel. I can leave, return and strike you down one by one. For your insolence, your families will perish, your homes will burn and you shall die."

Morrigans Betrayal

In my game, the Vampire Morrigan had planned to "betray" the party and wish the drill away. This is the dialogue that played out.   Morrigan, as the dialogue is happening you begin to notice your sword is glowing faintly despite the oppression of light by the shadowfell. You hear a faint voice emanating from the blade, that sounds like the Bard Estabon reciting his poem.   Morrigans Dialogue
Morrigan looks at panic and says,
"Panic, I think understand now. The poem that Estabon sang! 'When the sword has failed to win, Change the will and try again, With earnest heart, appeal above, The Muse may send her gift of love'. The muse is Muir, who cursed Gilean...I think I could save Ember".
Morrigan steps back, raises the sword high above her head, closes her eyes and says...
"I wish..... that the planar drill and myself be teleported to my castle."   You watch in horror as a surge of magical energy erupts from the blade, tainting its brilliant steel finish with a dark red glow. In a flash, the enormous drill maintaining the portal disappears as they are sucked into the void, along with Morrigan, and the portal to the material plane begins to collapse.   (Allow the party to react)   Gilean rages. "What have you DONE?! She will pay, YOU WILL ALL PAY." As both sides tense for battle, Gilean and your own attention is suddenly drawn to a strange bright light that breaks through some planar boundary behind him... A radiant warm blue glow emanating from it, tearing open a portal to the unknown... as a warforged holding a bow confidently steps through. Next a kitsune jumps, landing on all fours before standing upright next to her companion. A tiefling, fire burning in her eyes and holding a rapier comes next, stands to the right of the kitsune and holds it threateningly towards Gilean. Lastly a lizardfolk, dressed in the finest of clothing and holding a mysterious book that seems to be emitting the glow itself, steps through. The Lizardfolk, focusing intently on a ritual continues to chant, calling upon powerful magic as wisps of blue light rapidly dart out from the book. As if thousands of strands of magic wind and twist, they form a large dome over the group. Gilean immediately tries to teleport out, but is repelled by the mysterious barrier. "   The warforged shouts "You will never escape now!".   A faint smile crosses Gileans face, "Escape? You are trapped here with ME!".   ROLL. INITIATIVE

All Turasjir can do is focus his magical energy on keeping Umbra active. If he falls, Gilean can escape. He moves 15' a round away from threats, and keeps channeling Umbras energy into the barrier.

Nightwalker Actions

Shadowstuff Globule
Ennervating Focus - +12, 4d8+6 Necrotic

Phase 1: Nightwalker

Gilean Summons the Nightwalker and a dozen other enemies.   Pierce and Sorcha cry out: Gilean is protected by the Shadowfell, focus on the minions and we will strip away at his defenses!   Aura of the Shadowfell - Gilean has advantage on all saving throws and all attacks have disadvantage to hit him. The Shadowfell protects.

Phase 2: Boneclaw(s)

Gilean temporarily breaks the barrier he is encased in as Boneclaws rip through. Gilean tries to teleport out, but is repulsed by Umbra.   Pierce and Sorcha cry out: His strength falters! Keep it up, he used most of his remaining energy to summon those!

Phase 3: Gilean Vel

When the Boneclaws drop, Pierce and Sorcha focus all of their energy on Gilean, stripping him of his Shadowfell Aura. He is now vulnerable.   The Final Fight. Once Gilean dies, the area dissipates. The group finds themselves on a flat plane, filled with grass. The sun shines overhead brilliantly with not a cloud in the sky. Angelic music rings out, Daitha, Ember and Katya find themselves among your number. The sisters look at each other, and burst into tears, as if they have known each other their whole lives. They hug, before turning their attention to the group. Katya quickly hugs her uncle, he holds her tight and looks up at hte group. "Is... is it done?".
