2: The Haunted Manor Job
General Summary
The group gathed in Makiel's Office. she has a job to either disprove a Haunter Mansion in Jackson or clear whatever is out from there. They also get a pointer to first stop by The Cloister for Faye, and Stop at Jude Philips Monastary So look into holy oil for their weapons.
They run into Tristan grabbing their things and the group sets off on the week-long ride to Jackson. The three chatter as they ride finding out a few things about each other before setting down for the night. As Gil is on watch they get attacked. Gil gets pretty messed up, but with Allura's Swords and Faye's spells they were able to fight them off.
The next morning they eat and head off on another day of riding. Towards the end, they make it to The Cloister. *they are shown to Archmage Kianna Who seems to run the school. they Learn Faye's name is Faith. Gil and Faye also give an impassioned plea for her to continue to accompany the group. The Archmage is skeptical but agrees as long as Faye can keep up with her studies and with a report of their studies. Faye arranged places for them to sleep, Gil uses the downtime to sell some things they god from the bandits, have a bath and then have a relatively quiet night.
That night he had a disturbing dream where a dark power beckoned him to reach out and take the power he craved. Gil woke up in a cold sweat very early as a result. He confided his concern in his party mates and though they offered to stay on a day he insisted on moving along so they could get things done in a timely manner. On the road more Banter with Gil and Faye being the more optimistic to Allura's just business demeanor. Once they make Camp Gil helps Faye study and allure handles hunting some rabbits for dinner.
That night he dreamed of the sword again but this time called out and was introduced to Mo. Mo said he needed Gil and wanted to know what Gil aspired for, to which Gil replied he wanted adventure and to be surrounded by beautiful women. They strike a deal, mo will give Gil some power in exchange for doing some things he needs. Gil is very forward about what he wants and playfully relays what works for him with the sales pitch.
the next morning they continue on and manage to make it to the Monastery before dark. a priestess meets them out front and they state their intentions and Gil offers up a 50 gold as a donation. From their reaction, they might not get that kind of generosity as they were quickly invited in by Tina to meet the Head Priestess. they talk for a few minutes about getting holy oil and perhaps the services of a cleric. the High priestess agrees for the oil but cautions that the clerics there don't really prefer to leave. Tina takes them to their rooms and they all clean up and eat. Faye asks Gil is he thinks Tina is pretty; to which he says yes, but points out he's only flirting with her and he's being nice because he feels it goes a long way to be polite.
He walked Faye back to her room so she could study, he passed Tina who tried to see if he would stay to worship Pelor at the temple. Gil, said perhaps one day but gave Tina a sketch of her as a gift for letting them stay. He sleeps dreams of pretty girls and joins everyone the next morning. Faye had a pop quiz so she looked tired but otherwise, everyone rested well. He asked Tina if there were any takers but she says there weren't. Gil didn't pick up on it but Allura noted something was off with her answer, and Faye backs her up. Gil decides to Tail Tina, who goes to the headmistress's office. he heard tina and the headmistress talking about getting rid of them and not letting Colleen know.
As he was listening Colleen Reed approached and started to talk to him. She noted that Pelor put her here to aid him, but the church don't want her to do. Gil says their leaving now and invites her to join which she accepts. They got to Stables and were about to leave when the High Priestess Tina and a few others confronted them. they stated Coleen's place was with them. she stated that wasn't her purpose and that she was leaving with the party. The High Priestess looked s if she was going to force the issue, but Colleen summoned the voice of Pelor and immediately they all backed off. Gil wished Tina well and they all rode off.
As they rode Colleen told them she just knew they were coming and she was supposed to come with them. She expressed her annoyance that the High priestess tried to stop her and the will of Pelor. They chat while they ride and have a quiet camp and watch that night.
The next day is more riding and Colleen explains she's an Aasimar and was sent by Pelor to be here. They ride and arrive in town late in the day. There seems to be a lot of farms and old architecture. they get into the inn and get two rooms; Allura stating she'll stay with Gil much to Faye's disappointment. Gil questions why Allura suddenly cares when they get to their room; who says they've been getting too close and it might cause drama. Gil took that to mean that she wanted to be their friend. Allura admitted she was worried that Gil was going to hurt Faye, and she suspect he had a thing for Tina. Gil stated that he surely was being nice, and that his eyes are on Faye and that Faye was the first girl he kissed. Allura jokes they shouldn't be too long otherwise Faye might think Allura was putting moves on him.
They all eat and discuss their plan for talking to the townspeople and the mayor next. Gil talks to the innkeeper and finds there are noises in the middle of the night and the kids in the town go there for a fright sometimes. He gets a lead about some kids that hang out by the pond.
the next morning at breakfast Gil finds out colleen was in the monastery for a few years before they arrived. Gil gave her a sketch he made. After Allura rejoined, Gil went to get Faye up (starling her and getting slapped in the process) and they went to meet Mayor Gramfield and his daughter Tilde.
They find out the manor has been there for generations and kids have been running in and out for a while. Most don't talk about what happened. they do get that a businessman owned or had owned the manor, he refers them to a man named Davin who lives a little out of town. At the pond, they question the most recent group and find them hiding. They confront Gil and are generally stand-offish but point them in the direction of Petey who has been in the manor. They continue on to meet Petey above the general store. When he went to talk to Petey Petey immediately Recognized Gil, from his dreams. He sees Gil with the Sword. Gil redirects the conversation back to the manor which Petey says is full of ghosts and spirits. he has a Picture of "The Dead Guy in white" When Gil takes it he gets flashes of the undead and their white-clad revenant master. Colleen caught him and noted that she saw the same visions. He pays them 10 gold and heads off.
Outside Faye checks on Gil that looks like he's been walloped. It becomes clear Faye and Allura didn't have the same visions. He noted that visions weren't usual for him but he believe the manor had something to do with the sword. They decide to head to the edge of the city to see Davin, an elderly halfling.
Davin states he worked at the manor for many years, a Servent of Master Octavius Hawk, a Tall dark-haired handsome man. There was some sort of falling out between him and his wife which he didn't take well. He did something to hurt her and she left. After that, he became an isolationist and in the end poisoned most of his servants and died. Davin also tells them about servant passages in the walls, with secret buttons on the floorboards. He asked for any heirlooms they could find as well.
They do a quick discussion and decide going in sooner is the best thing to do. They hand out the holy oil and then head in. The first door is barred shut so they move on to the then next one, a room with a grand piano and some seats. The piano had some bats that startled Faye but not much else. they moved to the north into a library where there were zombies. they move forward to engage with Allura and Collen taking the forward positions. Colleen managed to turn two while they engaged the rest. the methodically cut thru the ones that stayed with them and then let Faye torch the runners. Ultimately they win but they take some good hits.
They continue down the hall to where they can hear a scraping behind a door, which turns out to be more Zombies in the kitchen. they get the Jump on them and down one Zombie straight off, but One of the reaming gets a good hit on Gil, and knocks him loopy. they manage to rally quickly and finish the other two off. so far they have not found anything of value. As they check the dining room they find four more, they try to get the drop on them but their noticed and a brawl breaks out. Colleen and Gil double team on while Allura takes the others and Faye provides support. this time their tactics fair better and they manage to down them pretty quickly.
they are looking pretty winded but decide to go on and rest after the next battle. They continue o and make it to a sitting room that looks like it was tossed years ago, making the zombies seem like a new thing. the finished searching the bottom part of the house looking finding 12 gold and heading downstairs. While walking down the steps they give way and Gil falls deep into an area below the basement. He manages to roll and prevent damage but he is alone down here.
The room he's landed in is large and it takes him a few minutes to find a wall. He can also feel the wind blowing down the hall and do he follows it to an open into a smaller room, continuing on he's suddenly attacked by an undead wizard who immediately raises two zombies. Gil by himself is forced to play hit and run with the creatures running in and out and doing left and right but eventually has to retreat. He short rests and resides to advance using stealth this time and getting past his assailants.
Here he finds an entrance into a smaller room, that's long, with some strange markings on the wall where he finds a Statue to Lolthand many many spider webs along the wall. He continues forward to some double doors and manages to unlock it and continues in. there is a larger room here with more spider webs and the Rapier thrust into a pedestal.. the same rapier that's been in his dreams. He quietly moves to the sword and takes it only to hear Mo asking if he is ready to accept, Gil tries to ask questions but mo presses he must accept, and finally, He does. With the power-up, he feels rejuvenated and levels his gaze upon a pair of giant spiders that are coming for him. He casts his first spell eldritch blast. He engages them in hexing one and whittling that one down getting a good swing and strikes it down. the other spider retreats.
At least it tried, but it retreated right into Faye, Allura, and Colleen who were taking on the mage and zombies Gil had skirted past. Faye runs up to Gil and hugs him tightly. After a reunion and some questions about Gil's suddenly magical abilities, they retraced steps back to the Lolth statue where they catch up and take a short rest. while colleen explains Lolth to the group. After that, they head back upstairs to finish the top floor of the house. Allura leads them to t trap door they found in the house and then back up to the first floor. They decide to head to the master bedroom but before they can enter something comes after them.
They start to carve up the zombies in the front line with spiders and the floating ghost of Mr. Hawk behind them. the first few volleys are digging into the front lines before it looks like Faye manages a hold person on Mr. Hawk while the other three hit the front lines to try to breakthrough. in the next Volley, two get good hits on Colleen who collapses, and Faye is forced to set off a fireball and takes out the rest of the front line. Gil gets colleen to the side and advances to Mr. JHawk and hits him with Hexblade curse and a solid hit. Allura follows suit and gets him good as well before he manages to take a chunk out of them both. Faye gets colleen up who heals the party and Gil manages a rapier dagger stab combo to send Mr. Hawk to the next life.
The manor however is on fire now and the group break into the master bedroom as their mode of escape is blocked. the room is untouched, and they do a quick search and find gold, silver, and chainmail. they tie a rope to a heavy dresser and go down. just before Gil takes up the rare he spies loot in the closet. a statue to Lolth made of jade and gems about 1 and 1/2 feet high. He grabs it and goes.
On the ground, they find villagers starting to look into the commotion. Gil comments about how worrisome it was that kids were sneaking in there when the place was littered with Zombies. The mayor walked up and Gil explained what they found. With that, the group headed back to the inn for a bit of rest after a job well done.
As they rest Gil fills them in on what he knows of Mo, the sword, and what he knows of his new powers, Stating mo has been leading him in a direction since he was young and how he believed Mo was just a moniker and explains to the best of his ability how he thinks his new powers work. He and Faye get a few quiet moment to themselves, admitting they were both scared they wouldn't see each other again and use the opportunity to share a kiss, a moment, and flirt more. gil gives her another picture he drew of her.
They also lament going having to go all the way back to Greywall, but decide to let Faye contact Tristen to see if there are any jobs while there this far away. He agrees so they decide to hang tight. He mentions mo to Tristen but Tristen is unaware of who that might be. Tristen also alerts Faye to a pending pop quiz. and with that they retire to their rooms fo the night.
