The Cult of the Jade Eye
The Cult of the Jade Eye is a secret criminal society and cult that spans the world. Their beliefs and goals centre around personal improvement, accumulation of wealth, justice and revenge, and overthrowing Celestia's rule, which they see as stifling and purposefully holding ponies back from embracing their true destinies.
The cult began forty years ago as a purely religious mystery cult centred around the Jade Eye, an infused artifact. The cult was nearly discovered during its earlier years when it had just begun criminal activities. Since then, the cult has organized and improved itself by hiding its true nature behind 3 different organizations.
The cult, because of the Jade Eye, views infusion differently than the rest of the world. Equestria sees infusion as an unasked for second cutie mark, that twists a pony away from their true destiny by altering their personalities, interests, and cutie marks. Because the cult can see into a pony's spiritual self, they have a different theory. They see a pony's ethereal self as being constantly in touch with divine powers in the aether, and a pony's cutie mark is a special relationship with divine power that can only be formed once. But there is nothing preventing a pony from gathering more power, and that major infusion is simply being attuned to a more focused and greater divine power. These beliefs are what fuels the cult's ideals of self improvement. With hard, smart work, anypony can become the hero they always dreamed they could be.
The cult is ruled by a single Jade Lord at a time, as well as a council of advisers and managers. Each Jade Lord has a singular vision of how to further the cult's interests while the council handles more long term plans and day to day affairs. The three proxy groups the cult hides behind have changed in the past to prevent suspicion, but the roles they play remain the same. One is a purely criminal enterprise that attracts funding, connection, and muscle. One is focused on housing and travel, granting agents safehouses and transportation, while making money through legitimate hotel business and smuggling. The third is always another "secret" society, often masquerading as a free thinkers club or magical research group, or a cult of their own. They handle research, recruitment, spreading ideas, and are often the scapegoat if cover is blown. This third group is small, and cycles often to create the illusion of instability in Equestria by appearing as home grown radical groups. The cult has no identifying symbol that marks members or safehouses, having one was considered too risky. Agents are expected to memorize names and faces rather than rely on visual crutches and hints. Rich cultists however still manage to show their loyalty in other ways. Typically they feign piousness to Celestia and set up a shrine to her somewhere in their house. However, every image of her would be without a crown, hinting at her inability to rule. The colours of the cult are green, gold, and black.
