Seekers
The The League of Arcane Study is a powerful organization, in fact one of the most powerful in the world. It is only one of two that defies political and geographic boundaries as it does.
It is made powerful not only for the ever-increasing need for magic in increasingly mystical world we live in, but because it is a diade of two very different branches: the scholarly branch and the expeditionary branch.
Often at odds with one another, the magi of the scholarly branch and the seekers of the expeditionary branch are both ancient orders, but the latter has stayed true to their ancient roots.
The seekers of the expeditionary branch continue a quest so intense some would liken it more to a crusade. This quest is to discover, catalog, and protect magical phenomena yet undiscovered by the world at large. Using potent arcane devices called "warners," the seekers and their expeditionary subordinates hunt down and find new magical phenomena (they call them Nascence Events ) that crop up all over Galea.
This quest takes them beyond the borders of civilization to the lawless unknown and makes many wonder who would choose such a dangerous life. If you were to ask a seeker why he does what he does, you would see the unmistakable glint under a long-weathered brow that. These folk do not find joy in poring over ancient texts in dusty libraries. Their hearts belong to the wilderness, to the new and unseen, and their passion, stoked by the hunt, drives them ever closer to their next claim- wherever that may be.
Structure
The highest ranking seeker is the lord of ventures, and while the archmagus of the The League of Arcane Study study well outranks him, few would defy the wishes of the venture lord.
An order as ancient as the Ten Masters who first founded the border-defying League of Arcane Study, the seekers of the expeditionary branch have changed little in forms of hierarchy and structure.
The lowest ranking member of the seekers is an acolyte. This acolyte will accompany a seeker in the field and are chosen from recruits and adventure-seekers who show a knack for understanding magical devices, spelunking, practical magical application, and artifact lore. However the seeker is the only one who may allow an acolyte to advance to the rank of junior expeditionary. Above them are the expeditionaries and the field masters. These ranks work tirelessly on behalf of their seekers and are known for their gruff, no nonsense demeanor. Beyond them are the seekers: men and women who have been given an ancient writ that gives them the authority to act as ambassadors of the League no matter where they are, from the duneshark seas of Andora, to the frigid sphinx roosts of Fokeland.
Assets
A seeker's power is not only in their badge of authority, which allows them an amazing level of autonomy with few stipulations, but in their sheer determination. An experienced seeker will have navigated dozens of biomes, survived hundreds of deadly encounters, and cataloged just as many new magical renascences. While they have to return on a semi-annual basis to a designated League headquarters, the seekers are truly each their own entity. Most seekers, save some pariahs such as Silum's Dosteland Graaf, have a carefully curated network of connections that allow them to draw from resources and assets that some lords would envy, and each guarded with a veil of secrecy.
Not only do they have access to the most prolific caches of magical formulae, alchemae, and artifacts, but being connected with the League also means safe havens, enchanting services, and magical teleportation afforded in nearly every major city.
A seeker's task, however, is paramount, and it is what drives most of their life. The career of a seeker is not one to be taken lightly. It is a life sworn to the unknown, to discovering that which man has yet to uncover, for good or ill. It is their lot in life, and many die in service to their own lust for exploration and discovery.
No matter the kind of seeker, be they a reclusive scholar who sends underlings on tasks all over the continent to the charismatic lead-from-the-front expedition leader bushwhacking with liaisons from the adventurer's guild, the expeditionary branch of the League of Arcane Study has considerable manpower and resources at their disposal. If they were pitted for a military effort in totality, no doubt they would be able to clash with the most formidable armies of the lords of the west or east. They are, thankfully, committed to a pursuit far more pragmatic: the hunting and claiming of Nascence Events
Think fast. Strike first. And never stake a claim you can't keep.
