Rhizi Silin Character in The Last Line | World Anvil

Rhizi Silin

Crafter of the Staff, Herald of the Wake

Lady Rhizi Silin of Balkehir

I refuse to believe that the same woman who stood at my side at the end of that battle is the same beast we banished today. How could she have helped build these cities, only to try and tear them down?
Rhizi Silin was a lich, formerly human-aasimar wizard, from a long-destroyed homeland. A once dedicated member of the Aremari, her fascination with the Staff of the Dark Sea and its abilities would see her slowly descend into evil, culminating in her defeat at the hands of her former organisation in 1965.

History

Like many other members of the Aremari, Rhizi was born in a large town in a kingdom slated for inevitable destruction at the hands of the Current of the World. This fate drew the young wizard into decades of research and investigation, and soon into the growing ranks of the Aremari, who were dedicating themselves to finding some permanent solution.   This remedy was identified, with Rhizi's expertise, as an all-powerful ██████████. 20 combat-ready members of the Aremari would mount an attack upon this ██████████, with only three surviving to bask in their success - Rhizi, a witch named Yllas, and a cleric named Xind. Together, the three returned with the spoils of their battle, with Rhizi and Yllas pioneering their use to construct Vilaen - the first 'stationary city' in the world.   It is some time after Vilaen's construction, and the subsequent flurry to try and construct more cities in its image, that Rhizi took the time to craft a powerful staff using the █████ of their fearsome quarry. This artefact, known now as the Staff of the Dark Sea, granted Rhizi unprecedented powers, and is believed to be the point at which she 'changed'.   Already in her late 60s by this time, the experienced wizard determined she was the sole person alive with the knowledge and talent to handle the staff to its proper potential, and so set about achieving immortality. She is estimated to have become a lich sometime in her early 70s, as this is when she ceased to appear in public, though messages and sendings were regularly sent.   This cloaked existence continued for nearly 2 millenia, during which time she moved to the new city of Balkehir and continued her research into the staff's abilities.   Her 'exile' ended in 1965, when she emerged to use the power of the staff to wreak untold havoc on the world. While her ultimate goal isn't known, the primary effect of her actions was an apparent 'hastening' of the Current, sending the then-7 stationary cities hundreds and thousands of metres closer to the edge of the world.   She was ultimately defeated by the descendants of the Aremari, with old-ally Yllas claiming her staff and destroying her soul cage personally.

Legacy

Once well respected in her time as the brains of the Aremari and second only to Xind as the reason for the party's success against the ███████, Rhizi has been forcefully sunsetted by history.   All that remains is the evidence of the damage she caused through her pursuit of nigh-divine knowledge, through the cracks in the many pillars of the surviving cities to the scars in the Finuhit Ocean.   And, of course, a mysterious staff fished from the selfsame waters a millenia and a half after her defeat.
