Godslayers
Godslayers. This is the name given to an elite ex-order of knights who hunt down the Demons, as the locals call them, who plague the Land.
They were created by order of Velexandor the Mad(479 a.G.A. - 548 a.G.A), at the time emperor of Midgard, as a special military force, to fight the entities from other worlds known as Demons to the common folk and Godlings to the Godslayers, in 509, and later to aid the empire in the Frost Wars against Jotunheimur (1020-1030).
After the fall of the empire of Midgard in 1103, and its separation into the Nine Kingdoms, Godslayers were still working for the kingdoms, but as a mercenary guild who hunted these Godlings, such as the Lesser Ones, e.g. vampires, and hellhounds; and the Greater Ones, e.g. Hel and Fenrirsulfr in change for some payment.
After the defeat of Hel and Fenrirsulfr at the battle of Mount Glepnir (1145 a.G.A), during the first Reginvojne, where the Godlings: Hel was imprisoned deep inside the mountain and Fenrirsulfr was killed, by an unnamed at the time Godslayer. Hel lays currently dormant under the mountain, guarded by the grandmaster Godslayers at Mikir, a very tiny independent state that lies at the foot of Mount Glepnir, Neragard, and is home to all Godslayers.
A Greatsword, average Godslayer greatsword length is usually about 150cm, though some are known to be larger, with an average blade width of 2.5 to 4.5 inches and thickness of 0.5 inches. It is made out of a special metal found predominantly in the Nidavelliri Mines and the Alene Mountains. The metal has been dubbed reginwòd by the dwarves in their tongue and God Iron in the Common Tongue. It's been called this way because the metal is extremely heavy (3.2 Ib/ft³) and because of a famous Dwarven legend involving the Old Gods and this metal. Conveniently God Iron doesn't have many uses other than serving the Godslayers, which they use for some of their equipment, since the metal is also extremely strong and resistant, perfect for battling huge Godlings.
To fight Godlings with these swords Godslayers branded them with runic symbols that give the sword powers, such as: on the base of the blade, two different runes are carved into the blade: 1. the lesser etherial rune, a simple rune that allows the object to be lightened 100 times (the actual weight of a Godslayer sword is 500 pounds on average, with the lesser etherial rune the sword should weigh about 5 pounds). 2. the greater etherial rune, this rune allows the sword to have contact with the astral plain, thus allowing the godslayer to hit or even kill Godlings -on the pommel there is a protection rune called aegis rune, which only activates at the will of the user when touching it, releasing a forcefield that protects them, at the expense of their stamina. -on the centre of the crossguard there is a tiny rune that binds the sword to the user, meaning only Godslayers can use the sword, the rune is called the lesser keeper rune;
A shortsword or occasionally two daggers both of which include the lesser and greater etherial rune and the lesser keeper rune;
Sometimes they may be equipped with a repeating crossbow, to wound the physical body of their targets;
Full body armour. which is either made out of steel and drake plate armour, although drake armour is rarely used because of certain laws that prevent people from hunting drakes, or a thick unicorn wool gambeson. The armour also includes unique -headpieces for every individual Godslayer.
Every Godslayer carries a journal that they write down their life during their hunts.
Process
Godslayers are selected for training, at a very young age, and are picked personally by a veteran Godslayer, who would in turn later be the instructor/master of the young Godslayer in training. In this training process the young Godslayers would learn all sorts of things on Godlings, like how to fight and defend from them, and even how to communicate with some of them. They would also learn how to do basic alchemy, read, write, and speak fluently nearly every language of the Land (including the ancient tongues of Old Midgardian and Ancient Nidavelliri). After their training is complete the apprentices are initiated in a ritual, they call Rebirth, which involves infusing the apprentice Godslayers with a pseudo Soul Contract, given to them by the remains of the deceased Godling known as Belphegor. This ritual is made so that the Godslayers are able to use sorcery.Abilities
Godslayers are known to use sorcery to aid in their combat; wether it's using magical runes branded onto their equipment, or perhaps the use of their foresight to predict their enemies moves in the next five seconds, allowing them to evade accordingly. Godslayers are also known to have superhuman abilities thanks to sorcery, such as: their well known superhuman abilities, like, extremely enhanced strength, speed and endurance, heightened senses, prolonged life and dulled pain receptors, to the point where they feel minimum pain during combat, allowing them to fight until they burn out.Equipment
Godslayers are usually equipped with:Popular Figures
Two notable Godslayers are Varel of Aeth, more notably known as The Black Shuck, and the one known simply as Fenrir, The Black Lion of Glepnir, who earned that name after killing the wolf Godling known as Fenrirsulfr at the battle of Mount Glepnir.lifespan
Not much is known about the lifespan of a Godslayer; some say they are immortal, incapable of succumbing to old age and remaining young forever, others don't believe in this superstition and say they have the lifespan of an everyday man. Both these statements are wrong, for we have only one written recorded case of a Godslayer dying of natural causes, and that was Jak of Neragard, former Godslayer Grandmaster(1125 a.G.A. - 1220 a.G.A.) and lone survivor of the very first Godslayer unit created in the year 523 a.G.A. Jak died in the mourning of Fabruavos 16th 1220 a.G.A at Mikir, this account has been written and made public by the currently active Godslayer Grandmaster, Isaan of Tevir. With this piece of information we now know Godslayers aren't immortal but they have extremely long lives. these long lives have consequences on their mental health, in some cases leading some Godslayers to insanity, making them a danger to the public, and so have to be put down by their fellow Godslayers; and in other cases leading to the Godslayer forgetting huge portions of their past, such as their name, relations and other stuff. This is why Godslayers always carry a journal with them, and it is said that Mikir holds the biggest library in the entire continent, for it holds 600 years worth of history of nearly every individual Godslayer.Public View
Not much is known about about Godslayers to the general public ; the known facts about Godslayers are that they are a group of mercenary/bounty hunters who hunt Godlings for payment and fight them whilst under a Soul Contract themselves. This is what is known about Godslayers; this and many myths and misconceptions surrounding, such as: most commoners believe that Godslayers are actually the infamous Demons themselves in disguise and only want to lead them astray from their path towards heaven; this misconception was orchestrated by the Church of Vea, which led to the Godslayers inevitable excommunication and banishment from the kingdom of Dolfea. This has led most Godslayers to travel outside of the Nine Kingdoms, finding work in Nidavellir, Alfheim & Svartalfheim, the Fae Republic and some may even find work in southern Jotunheimur. Although they aren't treated any better in the other territories of the Land. As we stated earlier Godslayers are for the most part despised by most kingdoms and countries that are under the influence of the Church of Vea; with the exception of Neragard, Upper and Lower Yanazè, and Nidavellir, where their public opinion is more viewed as the benevolent, heroic profession rather than a black-hearted unholy necessity. Though most hate or fear Godslayers, the cannot deny the fact that they are needed and that they are in every corner of the world, collecting bounties on Godlings that are threatening the people of the Land.
