Hochburg Arcanum Organization in The Known World: Over the Edge of Redoute | World Anvil

Hochburg Arcanum

The Hochburg Arcanum started as a consortium of teachers of arcane hoping to find protection in numbers. Now, centuries later, the Hochburg Arcanum has become the leading university of arcane teachings in the Known World. Sitting on a man-made hill in Merchant's Plain, the Hochburg Arcanum remains ever vigilant in their defensive preparations as persecution is constant from the general populace. Relatively small class sizes are standard which does allow apprentices the opportunity to study closely with the masters of the different Schools of Magic. To help augment funds to keep the institute operating, they specialize in the creation and sale of powerful magic artifacts and services.

MASTERING A CRAFT

The typical time required to advance from apprentice to licensed practitioner of a school of magic varies on the abilities of the student as well as the different school themselves. Though the average time is around fifteen years. Throughout one's tenure as an apprentice, all crafting and studies remain as property of the Hochburg Arcanum. It is not until one completes studies and licensure that an arcane practitioner is fully free to chase their own pursuits and keep their creations.

BECOMING AN APPRENTICE

The Hochburg Arcanum is a closed and secreted organization. They remain locked to the general public all but a week a year wherein they allow those wishing to take on apprenticeship entrance to be tested. The Reaping as it is called is the only time one can hope to gain entrance and start their arcane studies. During the Reaping, the heads of each of the eight colleges run the tests challenging the potential pupils. After all of the eight tests are completed, the students are then selected into each of the different schools of magic. From there studies will commence the following day. There is no limit on age for anyone wishing to participate in the Reaping.
