Furs of the Forbidden Beasts

Said to be the long distant cousin of the ancient beasts that once ruled this land, they have somehow maintained just a bit of the bloodline by living deep within the Backbone Mountains. These mountains are said to be where the world was birthed and it remains a scar on the land from those chaotic times.   Now only the heartiest of folk live in the area, it is not a good area for farming and not particularly full of fresh game to eat. The value of this land, what keeps the town from utter economic ruin, is the hunting of the various Forbidden Beasts.   Named such because most major religions consider these beings of chaos as a threat to the order they won and imposed after the Gods' War. After that war was supposed to be when the god's power reigned supreme in the land, but these beasts remain a reminder that their hard won victory was not as total and complete as their priests tend to imply during their grand ceremonies.   However, a few do remain in these distant areas and their chaotic powers make them capable of breeding with nearly any beast of the land leading to new and fresh creations constantly. Thus, another reason the gods do not abide their existence with great happiness, they are the one who now claim sole dominion over creation now.   The excellent properties of their belts make for function and fashionable clothing. They protect from hard winds and snowstorms with unparalleled toughness. Acquire a creature with the right properties and you find yourself with the warmest jacket that even prevents the accumulation of excess sweat, allowing the user to stay warm and comfortable.     Many adventurers seek out the area to prove themselves and acquire a pelt to use as a badge of honor, with the corresponding size of the beast being a rough approximation for how difficult it was to slay. Many adventurers will "flip the pelt" at the bar, and whoever has the grander pelt gets his drinks for free for the night.
