Wells of Magic
Dotted throughout the world are the Wells of Magic, arcane springs linked to Change itself. These are the source of the ambient magic found throughout most of the world. The wells seem to produce a glowing blue liquid: magic made matter.
Active vs Inactive Wells:
Magic has a certain ebb and flow. Over the course of decades and centuries, the energy of a well can change. Usually this coincides with the Tides of Magic, but not always.Inactive wells:
Inactive wells do not produce magic. They simply lie dormant, waiting the be re-activated by the Tides of Magic or perhaps just the whims of change. While they do not produce magic, it is still possible to identify an inactive well, typically looking at remaining signs of its influence from the last time it was active.Active wells:
Active wells seem to produce magic, constantly re-filling themselves from wellsprings unknown. These wells can be untamed or tame.Untamed vs Tame wells.
Wells of magic are powerful and dangerous sources of magic, but it is not entirely impossible to tame these wells and use the magic from them.Untamed Wells
The most common types of wells; these are the wells as they naturally are. Unbound by civilization, their magic dissolves into the currents of magic found throughout the world. This has the side-effect that the surrounding area is always an area of extremely volatile high-magic. The magical storms, unforgiving terrain, and magical creatures caused by this excess of magic all make reaching untamed wells incredibly dangerous, and lethal to all but the most powerful of mortals.Tame Wells.
While dangerous, it is possible to use the magic directly from wells. Usually this is just a one time affair, to supercharge a spell, or imbue an artifact with the highest form of magic. Sometimes, however, civilizations of immense power have been known turn such an act into a permanent arrangement. By constantly using a well, it is possible to prevent it from adding much to the Currents of Magic. Overtime, this will cause the area of high-magic surrounding the well to dissipate, allowing civilization to settle around the well. However, such frequent use of a well comes at a cost. By constantly using the magic, it is impossible to build up the magic required for the Ritual of Ascension except in extreme situations. Secondly, tame wells will usually be the first to "dry up" and become inactive when the Tides of Magic start to change.
