A Thegn's Keep

A typical Voslander Thegn will rule his lands from a small castle. A common such castle will contain a keep with two floors and a basement, and is equally likely to be made of stone or wood. If wooden, the keep is likely, though not guaranteed, to be covered in white plaster.   Within the keep, the basement will be used primarily for storage, while the ground floor will serve as a combined kitchen, great hall, and sleeping area for retainers and servants, who will sleep on collapsible cots along with any guests who do not outrank the Thegn. The upper floor will be the living area of the Thegn and his family, usually containing a large bed, a table or desk, chests for storage, and perhaps some other furniture. Each floor (other than the basement) will likely have a hearth for warmth and cooking, and is unlikely to be separated into multiple rooms.   Most keeps will have some sort of wall, usually a palisade or earthen rampart, but sometimes made of stone. They are likely to have a moat, dry or wet, but not all do. Within the walls (or simply surrounding the keep if it is unwalled) will be extra storage shelters, including for firewood, shelter for animals (including a stable if the Thegn owns horses), and possibly a separate kitchen, outhouse, and well.   Particularly well-off knights or particularly poor Ealdormen may also live in castles such as these. This is only a typical example, and in some cases the castles may be larger or smaller. Most knights and reeves will live in fortified manor houses, while Ealdormen are likely to have larger castles, similar to those seen in Jevaerland.
