Wizards of Dartil

One of the most respected professions on Dartil isles and beyond is being a wizard. People with a talent for the arcane arts are exceptionally rare. Although some secrets of magic have been figured out a long time ago, there aren't many people who can reach the highest levels of arcane knowledge through study and discipline alone. There is roughly 1 in 100,000 people with the aptitude to become a high ranking wizard which is why they enjoy such a high standard of life. There are many practitioners of magic in the nations of Dartil and most of them owe some part of their skills to the teachings and discoveries of wizards. Although religious orders aren't fond of magic derived outside of devotion to a deity, even they rely on contributions to arcane arts made by these talented individuals. In the countries on Dartil and beyond wizards serve a noble cause, working with engineers, artificers and scientists on pushing society forward. Their primary role is to teach fellow magic users in the proper ways of handling this power, but the majority of their time is usually spent on research. Natural talent for magic is tested during the first compulsory period of children's education and the tests are repeated regularly in search of prodigies who would carry on the mantle of this noble tradition.

Qualifications

In order to become a recognized wizard, one has to first demonstrate some basic understanding and mastery of arcane arts. Few people are able to successfully do it, and those that succeed are later carefully guided through higher levels of education. Once they successfully finish second level of education, these young prodigies are given a chance to enroll in some of the most prestigious universities on Dartil. Once they become students, they are placed in care of already recognized wizards and higher practitioners of magic who train them diligently in a variety of subjects. During these years, the performance and skill level of the students is carefully measured. Very few are considered good enough for the higher course in wizardry and most end up as artificers or teachers of magical arts called arcanists. Those that complete the higher course in wizardry become officially recognized as wizards.

Career Progression

Once a person becomes a recognized wizard of their nation they are expected to take part in educating the next generation of highly skilled magic users. Other than teaching, a large portion of a wizards work is research into the inner workings of magic. Every wizard chooses a field to specialize in and often times they are consulted for their knowledge by people who undertake special construction projects, or business endeavors. After contributing to their field of magic, gaining certain amount of experience in teaching and applying magic to various problems a wizard is promoted by his superiors to the rank of a grand wizard. Similar process takes place once again and this time the grand wizard is promoted to a rank of wizard grandmaster. Once the position is open and the individual is respected enough by their piers to be elected a grandmaster wizard is promoted to an arch wizard of their school. In a special set of circumstances, a wizard may choose to join the royal council of wizards who oversee the use and development of magic for their country and work by serving and advising their ruler.

Payment & Reimbursement

Recognized wizards of a nation are payed regularly a large sum of money for simply being a rare and valuable professionals. Each month they receive 2000 gold coin's worth of payment plus a certain bonus that is calculated by the royal council of wizards for their contributions to their field and the development of their nation. It isn't uncommon for particularly productive mages to be payed over 5000 gold coins per month from the ruling authority and employers who seek them out for their skills. Other than money, wizards of all ranks are payed a lot of respect in their countries and are seen as a form of nobility.

Other Benefits

Other than money, access to highly influential people, rare objects and materials, recognition and respect, benefits available to wizards are being recognized as a form of nobility in their own right. Not only do they gain access to powerful people, but they are often put in seats of power themselves.

Perception

Purpose

The primary purpose that wizards serve in their societies is training the future generations of spell casters and researching into new forms of magic. Other then teaching and studying, these highly skilled practitioners of arcane arts are sought after by many rich and influential people who need their skills for various personal or business projects.

Social Status

Wizards are considered a form of nobility and move without trouble in the highest circles of their societies. Some are famous even in the remotest regions of Dartil and enjoy immense respect of their countrymen.

Only a small number of people have what it takes to become an officially recognized wizard, roughly 1 in 100,000.

History

The first schools of the arcane arts started around 680 when the night elves shared some of their secrets of magic in exchange for ownership of the island north of Wetford. After these first people benefited greatly from these new discoveries, schools were swiftly opened to help share, preserve and deepen the knowledge of magic. Wizards were graduating ever since.
