Hearts in The Hylian Fantasy | World Anvil

Hearts

Hearts are the standard with which the Zelda series, sans Adventure of Link, tracks health and damage for the player. In most entries in the series the player begins the game with only 3 hearts. Due to early game limits, each heart effectively equaled 2 "Hit Points", with half a heart of damage being the minimum damage. Later games increased this to 4 and then 6 effective hit points, with spells, armor, and enemy type or weapon increasing the players effective health. Traditionally, falling into any of the multiple abyss', lava pits, or deep water present in many Dungeons would take an entire heart of damage and reset the player at the last entrance to the current room. If the player took more damage than they had remaining hearts, they would be greeted by a GAME OVER screen and asked if they wanted to continue, resetting them to the beginning of the current dungeon or area, or quit, taking them back to the Title Screen.   Throughout each game, Heart Containers can be retrieved which improve the players total available hearts by 1. Starting in A Link to the Past, multiple Pieces of Heart can be acquired. When 4 pieces are collected by the player, they create a single heart container, increasing the players hearts by 1. In Twilight Princess, this was changed to 5 pieces in order to increase the amount of in-game side quests without shortening the main game.   For purposes of The Hylian Fantasy, a single heart is equal to 6 hit points and more realistically represents injury and fatigue as opposed to arbitrary numerical health. Cinematically it can also represent a type of "Hero Point" allowing the player to have dodged larger, near deadly attacks, or take glancing blows. Heart Containers still improve hearts by 1, but 6 Pieces of Heart are required to make one. A characters total hearts is set to a maximum of 30.

Healing Hearts

In the games, hearts are restored in one of 6 ways: Eating, Sleeping, In-field hearts, Potions, Heart Containers, or through the healing magic of Fairies. For world purposes, immediate rejuvenation is only accomplished through Magic, while the other options require more rigerous application while also providing longer term, additional benefits.

Spirit Orbs

In Breath of the Wild, Heart Containers were replaced with Spirit Orbs. Collecting 4 of these from the Shrines allowed the player to exchange them at Statues of Hylia for either a Heart Container or a Stamina increase. For the purposes of The Hylian Fantasy these Spirit Orbs only provide the equivalent of 3 Pieces of Heart, while still being used for a similar increase in Stamina.
This is a Meta Article and is an attempt at making the Legend of Zeldas game mechanics better for my de-gamified elements as seen in this world.
