Astillero

Astillero is the largest of Antes towns known to the Digital Conclave, and the first to enter an industrial technological level.

Defences

The first and most successful Antes town to industrialize, Astillero took the chance to upgrade its defences significantly. Rifles, gatling guns and hand grenades all see use by the city watch, which mans the wall surrounding the settlement. The weapons boast exceptional firepower and are mass produced in order to equip the great numbers of soldiers guarding the proportionally great population, but a policy of quantity-over-quality means they tend to jam and break when you need them most.   The city watch also keeps a small fleet of steam ironclads patrolling the coast.   In case of emergency, a militia can be formed from the factory workers, fishermen and countryside farmers.

Industry & Trade

After the discovery of coal, the inhabitants of the then-small town quickly learned of its potential for the generation of heat and electricity, metal smelting, and powering steam engines. An industrial revolution kicked in, with most of the people abandoning the surrounding farmland to seek greater opportunity and safety in the growing city. What farmers remained could easily cover the food demand thanks to the ever-increasing presence of steam machines to aid in their labor.   Inside the walls, factories mass produce all manner of items, with the surplus traded to other non-developed or developing towns such as Bell City. Steamboats fish in the river escorted by ironclads, or watched from the shore by an ever present lighthouse. And smoke clouds serve as a beacon over the settlement for any that would come to find it, friend or foe.

History

Eventually, the same wilder horde that razed nearby Bell City would present itself at its gates, demanding Astillero cease its industrial activities or suffer the same fate. The tribals seem concerned by the amount of smoke in the air and the constant noise from the machines, which was steadily driving away what wildlife could escape and severely endangering the rest.   While the Antes inhabitants respect Nature almost as much as their fellow wilders, they are not willing to give up their new lifestyle, stating greater productivity leads to better quality of life and a better fighting chance against their common enemies from the Conclave.   The conflict is so far unresolved.

Architecture

Imposing brick and mortar factories with steel and iron skeletons, massive glass windows and looming smokestacks, all covered in black soot, are the first thing anyone notices upon walking through the main gate. Other buildings such as apartment complexes and hospitals sport the same aesthetic, and steam pipes and electric wire run through the streets.

Geography

Located to the southeast of the Conclave, most of the city lies on a lowland next to a canal which connects to the Great River, somestimes suffering inconvenient but manageable floods. A notable exception is the city fortress, sitting on top of a small hill under which some of the coal mines are located.

Natural Resources

Near the city exists a massive coal deposit, accessible through tunnels and mine shafts that run deep underground and are known to sometimes collapse, a main cause of death for workers. In addition, it has access to the Great River and its plentiful fish supply.
